Who is Roger Boggs - Karate Teacher - Phoenix Arizona

Roger Boggs.... Phoenix AZ.
Goshin Karate & Judo Academy

I first started training in 1970’s when I was 12 years old. I started with Wresting. I was inspired by a man named Dan Gable (Gable compiled an unbelievable record of 182-1, during his prep and college careers).

At age 16, I started to train with the Black Belts from Jung’s Tae Kwon Do Academy a satellite school that they ran in the basement of the Salvation Army on the northwest side in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. These Black Belts were Tournament Fighters/ Kick Boxing Champions that traveled the Midwest.

I stopped training when I went to college, got married and relocated to Scottsdale Arizona in 1986. Life was good until my 13 year old son started to fight in school. So I went to the closest Karate School and signed us both up. This was the fall of 1994. I was fortunate to find Goshin Karate & Judo Academy, Their primary focus was on Self-Defense (Goshin in Japanese means Self Defense) ground self defense, grappling and Bunkai which I later found out was the interpretation of Kata (Neither of which were taught from the Tae Kwon Do black belts.)

I excelled quickly in both Karate and Judo, the prior experience from my childhood came back quickly – It was like riding a bicycle. The Anderson’s (Mike & Cathy) allowed me to help teach in the beginners classes when I was a Blue Belt and turned over the Saturday morning classes to me when I was a Purple Belt after I completed the Instructor training program. I obtain the rank of Shodan on December 9th 2000.

Mr. Anderson became ill in 2004 and before his passing, asked me if I was interested in purchasing the school and continuing the tradition. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to continue on with “The Goshin Way” so in 2006, I became the owner and Chief Instructor at Goshin Karate & Judo Academy in Scottsdale, Arizona. I currently hold the rank of 4th Dan (4th degree Black belt) in Okinawan Kempo, 5th Dan in Iss Hogai, American Jujitsu, Black Belt in American Kenpo Karate and a Black Belt in Judo.

I now chart the path for the dojo’s future. I have been blessed with the current student population of over 200 students, which we have maintained through the transition. I now set the curriculum for all classes, determine belt promotions and lead the adult and children’s classes.
My passion is for all things “Martial Arts” – This is what powers my daily training ethic and allows me to continue to grow as a martial artist through guidance from many sources in the Judo, Jujitsu, Jeet Kune Do, Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Police Training and the Karate community.

Our customers are telling us it is not about the trophies (since we rarely participate in competition). What they have said in our recent customer survey was that they feel safe at our school, that we have a trained and professional staff; it feels like family at our Academy, our equipment is top notch and it is a clean and friendly environment. More important they feel we are giving their children an advantage in life.

Over the last few years Goshin Karate and Judo Academy has developed a Life Coach/Personal development mindset to teach our students to manifest the principles of the martial arts. Integrity, Honesty, and Self Control are the guiding principles of karate, as given by Master Gichin Funakoshi, the father of modern karate. "The ultimate goal of the Martial Arts is not in victory or defeat, but rather in the perfection of the character of its participants",

We have kicked off a New Leadership program with an on-line Leadership website where our students can document their community successes and acts of kindness (Goals and Achievements) they have performed outside of the dojo. The website is motivating the rest of the Academy to become “Action Heroes”.

Our school blog http://GoshinKarate.blogspot.com/ has become a resource for our community, our students, and their families. Mr. Boggs’ blog addresses issues about safety, eating healthy, listening skills, conflict resolutions, and dealing with anger to name a few.

We support the St Mary’s food bank and the Chrysalis Crisis Center which help the homeless and battered women and has recently kicked off our “Adopt a Family for the Holidays” Campaign . . . Here at Goshin - We are more than kicking and punching.

Goshin Karate & Judo Academy was named the Martial Arts “School of the Year by the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame in August of 2008. In January 2009 Goshin Karate & Judo Academy was named the Best Karate/Martial Arts School in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area by Best of Greater Phoenix.com and has recently been named the Best Martial Arts Class in Phoenix/Scottsdale by Nickelodeon’s Parent Choice Award.

Goshin Karate & Judo Academy has been providing award-winning instruction in the martial arts area since 1991 by offering a variety of programs including youth Karate, Karate for Kids, Children's Stranger Danger/Abduction Safety, Kids Safe Workshops, Karate Summer Camps, Women’s Self Defense training, adult, teens and the entire family.

Womens Self Defense - Phoenix Arizona

If you are attacked - Take a little DNA with you.
One of my Goshin Girls pointed out the need for DNA so I thought I would write about it. Here goes...
Hey did you know that about 31 million crimes are reported in the United States annually. That's about one crime per second.

Victim rates of violent crimes have increased. Without warning, a situation can turn from safe to sorry; turning you not only into a victim, but the top news story of the day.

And, most people who are victimized never imagined that crime would happen to them. It always happens to the other person.

So, in the next hour, somewhere in the United States, the following will happen:
900 Thefts
189 Violent Crimes
124 Assaults
66 RobberBoldies
24 Sexual Assaults
12 Rapes
2 Murders

Do you have the necessary knowledge and skill set to protect yourself against one of these crimes? Do you know what to do if confronted by an attacker? Do you have a game plan to deal with violent crime?

Do you know where and how DNA is collected

DNA is contained in blood, semen, skin cells, tissue, organs, muscle, brain cells, bone, teeth, hair, saliva, mucus, perspiration, fingernails, urine, feces, etc.

Identifying DNA Evidence
Since only a few cells can be sufficient to obtain useful DNA information to help your case, the list below identifies some common items of evidence that you may need to collect, the possible location of the DNA on the evidence, and the biological source containing the cells. Remember that just because you cannot see a stain does not mean there are not enough cells for DNA typing.

Further, DNA does more than just identify the source of the sample; it can place a known individual at a crime scene, in a home, or in a room where the suspect claimed not to have been. It can refute a claim of self-defense and put a weapon in the suspect's hand. It can change a story from an alibi to one of consent. The more you know how to use DNA, the more powerful a tool it becomes

Evidence
baseball bat or similar weapon
hat, bandanna, or mask
eyeglasses
facial tissue, cotton swab
dirty laundry
toothpick
used cigarette
stamp or envelope
tape or ligature
bottle, can, or glass
used condom
blanket, pillow, sheet
"through and through" bullet
bite mark
fingernail, partial fingernail

Possible Location of DNA on the Evidence
handle, end
inside/outside surface
nose or ear pieces, lens
surface area
cigarette butt
licked area
side/mouthpiece
inside/outside surface
person's skin or clothing
scrapings

Source of DNA
sweat, skin, blood, tissue
sweat, hair, dandruff
sweat, skin
mucus, blood, sweat, semen, ear wax
blood, sweat, semen
saliva
skin, sweat
semen, vaginal or rectal cells
sweat, hair, semen, urine, saliva
blood, tissue
blood, sweat, tissue
Of course you should be beware awareness of your surroundings, reduce risk and avoidance certain places but with college starting again, at that age we are not alway thinking wisel.
Control over your fate thru learning to observe your environment, continually evaluating it, and reacting appropriately to what you see or feel.
But if you are attacked - Scratch. Bite and Claw.... Take a little DNA with you.

Karate Teacher in North Phoenix - Teaches his Karate Kids how not to fight.

23 phrases to help you NOT fight.

Almost all couples fight; Kids Fight! the secret is to NOT fight or to fight right.
I’ve posted about what not to say during a fight. Here are some phrases that actually help.

I review this list from time to time so that when I’m arguing with my wife, I remember the phrases that help me fight right. Recently, for instance, I was angry at her for showing, I thought, a lack of respect for my priorities. So I waited until a good moment (this itself is tough for me) and said, “I need you to listen. This is important to me.” From her startled expression, she clearly thought I was starting a fight; but by warning her that I needed her to respond carefully, we managed to avoid a fight altogether.

When my wife and I do argue, (very rearly) I find that the single best technique to apply is humor. If one of us can laugh and joke around, the angry mood lifts instantly. But during an argument, my sense of humor is the first thing to go.

Failing that strategy, here are 23 phrases that help turn down the heat of anger:

Please try to understand my point of view.
Wait, can I take that back?
You don’t have to solve this—it helps me just to talk to you.
This is important to me.
Please listen.
I overreacted.
I see you’re in a tough position.
I can see my part in this.
I hadn’t thought of it that way before.
I could be wrong.
Let’s agree to disagree on that.
This isn’t just your problem; it’s our problem.
I’m feeling unappreciated. [Always, my craving for gold sticker!]
We’re getting off the subject.
You’ve convinced me.
Let’s take a break for a few minutes.
[If you can remember to do this, it’s extremely effective—especially if you’re having a big fight. After a break, it’s almost impossible to go back to yelling.]
Please keep talking to me.
I realize it's not your fault.
That came out all wrong.
I see how I contributed to the problem.
What are we really fighting about?
How can I make things better?
I’m sorry.
I love you.

I actually get tears in my eyes when I read this list. Such is the uplifting power of of how to avoid a fight or not fight at all or as the author called ---- Fighting Right.

Also, to fight right, it’s very important to respond well if your sweetheart makes a repair attempt—the technical term for a gesture of reconciliation and love. Don’t rebuff a repair attempt!

What other strategies or phrases have helped you fight right?

Karate Teacher in Phoenix shares the benefits of GreenTea

Drink Green Tea

The steady stream of good news about green tea is getting so hard to ignore that even java junkies are beginning to sip mugs of the deceptively delicate brew. You'd think the daily dose of disease-fighting, inflammation-squelching antioxidants--long linked with heart protection--would be enough incentive, but wait, there's more! Lots more.

CUT YOUR CANCER RISK
Several polyphenols - the potent antioxidants green tea's famous for - seem to help keep cancer cells from gaining a foothold in the body, by discouraging their growth and then squelching the creation of new blood vessels that tumors need to thrive. Study after study has found that people who regularly drink green tea reduce their risk of breast, stomach, esophagus, colon, and/or prostate cancer.

SOOTHE YOUR SKIN
Got a cut, scrape, or bite, and a little leftover green tea? Soak a cotton pad in it. The tea is a natural antiseptic that relieves itching and swelling. Try it on inflamed breakouts and blemishes, sunburns, even puffy eyelids.

PROTECT YOUR SKIN
In the lab, green tea applied directly to the skin (or consumed) helps block sun-triggered skin cancer, which is why you're seeing green tea in more and more sunscreens and moisturizers.

STEADY YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE
Having healthy blood pressure - meaning below 120/80 - is one thing. Keeping it that way is quite another. But people who sip just half a cup a day are almost 50 percent less likely to wind up with hypertension than non-drinkers. Credit goes to the polyphenols again (especially one known as ECGC). They help keep blood vessels from contracting and raising blood pressure.

PROTECT YOUR MEMORY, OR YOUR MOM'S
Green tea may also keep the brain from turning fuzzy. Getting-up-there adults who drink at least two cups a day are half as likely to develop cognitive problems as those who drink less. Why? It appears that the tea's big dose of antioxidants fights the free-radical damage to brain nerves seen in Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

STAY YOUNG
The younger and healthier your arteries are, the younger and healthier you are. So fight plaque build-up in your blood vessels, which ups the risk of heart disease and stroke, adds years to your biological age (or RealAge), and saps your energy too. How much green tea does this vital job take? About 10 ounces a day, which also deters your body from absorbing artery-clogging fat and cholesterol.

LOSE WEIGHT
Oh yeah, one more thing. Turns out that green tea speeds up your body's calorie-burning process. In the every-little-bit-counts department, this is good news!

Phoenix Karate Teacher - Shares Great ways to start your day

A Healthy Lifestyle Starts Each Morning!

The way you spend your morning can add a certain flavor to the rest of your day. Here are some healthy lifestyle habits to incorporate into your morning routine that can leave you better able to handle the stress you experience. Try one or several, and experiment until you find what suits you.

Put On Some Music
Music therapy has been shown to reduce stress and have a positive effect on health. But you don't need a therapist to enjoy some of the benefits music has to offer. Listening to music as you get ready and start your day will create positive energy and a soothing sense of peace (or a sense of fun, if you play party music). Music can compliment other healthy lifestyle habits, adding a sense of peace to a yoga workout, putting a spring in your step on a morning walk, or stimulating your mind as you write in your journal.

Stretch in the Shower
The hot water will loosen up your muscles, so it’s easier to get a good stretch. The act of stretching will help to release stored tension and enable you to start the day feeling more relaxed, at peace, and ready to handle what comes your way.

Eat a Balanced Breakfast
For those of you who start the day on a bagel and coffee, read this! Breakfast is known as ‘the most important meal of the day’ for a very good reason: a healthy meal in the morning can balance your blood sugar levels and give you the sustenance you need to handle physical and mental stress. Without it, you will be less resilient, both physically and mentally. Be sure to have plenty of protein and fruit, not just caffeine and empty calories!

Drink Green Tea
Sipping a warm cup of tea is a soothing activity that will help you prepare for the day ahead and feel nurtured. Green tea is loaded with antioxidants, so it’s a delicious and healthy lifestyle choice.

Write in Your Journal
Journaling has many health and stress management benefits, and can also lead to increased self-awareness. Writing once a day can help you feel focused, process negative emotions, and solve problems.

Morning Walk
Walking has so many health benefits, the stress management benefits are practically just gravy! A morning walk can get you ready for your day, help you sleep better at night, lower your stress level, and reduce your risk of numerous health conditions. And if you bring a dog with you, you’ll be lavished with attention as well!

ONE MORE FOR MY KARATE STUDENTS……

Run your Kata’s
For a healthy body and peaceful mind, few activities give as much ‘bang for your buck’ as Karate. Combining all the goodness of several stress management techniques, such as diaphragmic breathing, meditation, stretching and more, karate provides some of the best stress management and health benefits you can find in a single technique. A good way to start your morning is by doing a series of Kata’s.

Karate School Owner in Phoenix Arizona helps struggling families for the Holiday

Adopt a Family for the Holidays

Let’s take what we’ve learned in the Dojo and apply it in the World
--- Here is a Leadership project I would like to put together this Holiday Season…. “Act of Kindness”

Some families are really struggling. And wouldn’t it be nice to provide some joy and relief in the midst of their difficulties.

Do you know of a family in need? Send Mr. Boggs an e-mail and let him know why you think this family should be adopted by Goshin for the Holidays (Someone you know preferably a Goshin Family member) that needs assistance. In this e-mail also provide us their wish list with gift ideas, colors and sizes, as guidelines for gifts…. We will need a brief family profile but do note that we will respect the privacy of the families and not share their name or Identity.

We will try to give each family member several gifts and a grocery gift card for purchasing a celebratory meal. (Depending on the number of families in need)

Once we have our family(s) Mr. Boggs will ask for the support of the entire Academy to help provide gifts, It would help if they were wrapped and labeled with the family member's first name on it.

Those wishing to help with the “Goshin Adopt a Family for the Holidays” can do it two ways… You can provide monetary sponsorships: For Example…

Your gift of $20 provides a toy for a child
Your gift of $30 provides clothing for a child
Your gift of $50 provides Holiday dinner for a family
Your gift of $150 provides an entire Holiday experience for a family of four

Or you can help by picking up one of the items from the wish list.

REMEMBER… Some parents cannot afford to give their children gifts due to there current circumstances and they will be very grateful for our help.

We will accept any new toys, gifts, toiletries, food cards (grocery) and gift cards (Target, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Borders, etc.). The gifts will then be delivered to our office at a pre-arranged time before Holidays.

If you know a family in need or if you are interested in helping, please call Roger Boggs at (480)951-2236 or send an e-mail at GoshinKarate@cox.net We will start collecting the wish lists from families in mid September.

Thanks for your support – Goshin Cares.

Phoenix Karate - Back to School Tips

ABCs of back to school

PHOENIX -- For many valley students, it's time to make the transition from summer vacation to a new school year.

Phoenix Children's Hospitals Healthy Steps Department offers the following advice to parents, for a smooth back-to-school experience.

General Guidelines·

· Get your children on a wake-up and bedtime routine 2-3 weeks before school.

· Make sure your child gets at least eight hours of sleep each night and a healthy breakfast.

· Find out what school supplies and/or uniforms are needed for the year.

· Talk to your kids about school and what to expect.

· If they are anxious or afraid, talk about school as a "special event." Let them know what to expect and listen to their fears and concerns. Schedule a visit to your child's school and arrange for a meeting with their teacher before school starts.

· Discuss ways to make friends, especially for kids who are special needs or shy.

· Make sure the backpack is ready to go and organized for the first day of school.

· Pack healthy snacks and lunches.

· Put your child's name on everything.

· If possible, arrange to take your child to school on the first day.

Medical Issues

· Make sure that your child gets a back-to-school physical and that immunizations are up to date.

· Fill out all of the emergency contact and health information forms sent home by the school.

· Be sure that the school nurse and classroom teacher know about all of your child's medical issues, food allergies, risk for bee stings, inhalers, and all other medications.

· Make arrangements with the school nurse to administer any medication your child might need.

· Advise the teachers about any conditions that might affect how your child learns. For example, children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) should be seated in the front of the room and a child with vision problems should sit near the blackboard.

· Parents of children with learning disabilities or, ADHD, should meet with teachers to discuss an individual educational plan and all counselors should be present.

· Be careful that backpacks are not too heavy or consider a rolling backpack to avoid back strain.

Transportation and Safety

· Know what time school begins and how your child will get there.

· Be aware of the school's designated drop-off and pick-up areas (point out all landmarks) and discuss these with your child.

· If your child is riding the bus, make sure you know the bus schedule and pick-up and drop-off locations. · Have your child ride with a sibling or a buddy.

· Make sure your child knows his or her parent's name and address. You could add a luggage tag to their backpack or place information inside of a folder.

· Familiarize yourself with regulations on bikes, scooters and other vehicles.

· Review traffic safety including traffic signs and signals and all crosswalks.

· Go over a safe route with children who are walking or riding a bike. Remind them that it is never OK to a accept rides, candy, or invitations from stranger.

· Make arrangements for after-school care, if needed, and make sure your child is familiar with these arrangements.

· Remind children about proper bathroom sanitation and to always wash their hands.

Psychic Punches - Phoenix Karate - Karate for Kids

10 Ways to Transform your Toxic Thoughts

If you've ever felt the way anger or fear can electrify the atmosphere in a room, you'll know what Sandra Ingerman means by "toxic thoughts." The author, a family therapist and shaman practitioner, believes our thoughts and emotions transmit an invisible but palpable energy that can affect our mental and physical well-being. "Psychic punches," she writes, are as real as physical violence. Here are her ten simple ways to protect yourself from negative thoughts and learn to radiate positive energy.

Breathe Through Your Heart
Breathing is one of the simplest ways to transform energy. This is an exercise you can do throughout your day: Place your hands on your heart and feel your heart moving as you breathe. This is calming, and feeds the energy of love, peace, and harmony in the world.

Look in a Mirror
Before reacting to a challenging situation, try emoting as you watch your reflection in a mirror. No one wants to see herself acting out in a toxic way. You may feel silly, but don't let this stop you. Taking ourselves too seriously is one of the causes of negative thoughts.

Express; Don't Send
Stress can make us act in ways we might regret later on. It is OK to have problematic emotions, and it's important to acknowledge your feelings. Just be careful not to send the energy as a "poison dart" to yourself, others, or into the world.

Think of a Favorite Face
The energy behind your emotions goes to all living beings. If confronted by someone who triggers problematic emotions for you, think of a loved one and impose his or her image on the face of the person challenging you. For example, you might work with the face of a baby, kitten, puppy, or your favorite flower.

Watch Your Words
Your words, like thoughts and emotions, have the power to change your experience and the world we live in. This applies to both the words we say out loud to others as well as self-talk. If you tell yourself that you're not a good person, you begin to manifest this reality. Fill your mind with positive words and this is how your life will unfold.

See the Divinity in Others
Never pity others who you perceive as suffering--this only pushes them deeper into a hole. When you see people in their divine light and perfection you help give them the strength they need to deal with their troubles. Remember that your perception creates your reality.

Connect With Nature
We are a part of nature. When we are in a state of stress we are cut off from the nurturing we receive from the elements -- earth, air, water, and fire (the sun) -- and we can actually become ill. Nature is a great healer. Take time out and connect with the natural world whenever you can.
Work With Water
The life-force of water can wash away your pain, and the simplest activities can have a healing effect. As you wash your hands, take a shower, or stand in the rain, visualize negative energy flowing from you and being transformed into light.

Protect Yourself With Light
If you feel someone is psychically attacking you or being energetically hostile toward you, imagine a protective light surrounding you. Some people think of a white energy field; I imagine being enclosed in a translucent blue egg. Find a color that works for you. This will protect you from any harmful energies being sent your way.

Respond with love
You do not have to be the receiver of negative and toxic energy from others. You can return the energy you don't wish to receive with love. Responding with love will prevent you from moving into attack position and creating more negative energy. It is only love that heals.

Ninja spotted in North Phoenix

2009 could be the year of the Ninja

This, my friends is news to warm the heart of any modern martial arts movie lover.

THE SHEPHERD and UNDISPUTED 2 co-star Scott Adkins will be making his leading debut in an upcoming all-out ninja flick by action director Isaac Florentine.
Scott Adkins - "Ninja" Subway fight scene

The news comes to us courtesy of the "Scott Adkins Fanz" forum and website where an early plot summary for NINJA from the film's production company Nu Image is posted.

The gist of the story is that a young ninja in Japan runs away to America with a woman expected to marry against her will. Her angry husband-to-be is a yakuza boss who follows them to New York with a gang of assassins in tow to get revenge. Using his fighting skills, the ninja fends them off initially. Yet after his girlfriend disappears, he is forced into what is described as an "epic battle on a moving train." The ninja is badly beaten, allowing a local detective trying to piece together what's going on to catch up with him. Once recovered, the ninja teams with the detective to take on the yakuza boss and his assassins that include a female ninja, aka a kunoichi and a blind ninja. Another intriguing element is that the ninja develops "modern versions of the ninja's arsenal" to take on an army of assassins.

The original synopsis refers to the hero as being Japanese, at least in name, suggesting the script was originally written with someone else in mind to play the lead. It's no major loss. Adkins may not be Japanese but his screen fighting skills are world class and it's about time this British-born actor finally gets a chance to become a martial arts star. Who would have guessed it would be in a new modern ninja flick?

Prospects for this movie are huge, given the right circumstances. Florentine has repeatedly proven himself to be a highly capable action director with a genuine love and understanding for martial arts screen fighting. Given a respectable budget and enough creative freedom, NINJA could even give the upcoming Wachowski Brothers film, NINJA ASSASSIN, some competition. One thing is for sure, Rain ain't got nothing on Scott Adkins and he'll need all the overblown digital wizardry the Wachowskis will undoubtedly throw at him.

For now, Adkins has been keeping busy on the shoot for X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE where he plays one of several Weapon X operatives going against Hugh Jackman, who reprises his role from the X-MEN films.

Adkins is also expected to reprise his role as Russian underground fighting champ "Uri Boyka" in Florentine's UNDISPUTED 3. This time, he assumes the role of the main protagonist. Having suffered a crippling defeat at the hands of American boxing champion George Chambers (Michael Jai White) at the end of the previous movie, he is given a titanium knee replacement that becomes his secret weapon for deadly knockouts. He is then transferred to a Chinese prison where he is forced to compete in an annual death match and eventually leads a prison riot.
Good stuff coming from the power team of Scott Adkins and Isaac Florentine. It looks like 2009 is going to be the year of the ninja.
