Karate Kid - Anti Bullying Movie

The Karate Kid Movie has an Anti-Bullying message

Many parents are at a loss when they discover that their child is being bullied at school. Do they get involved? Let their child handle it on their own? They wonder why their child, in particular, is being picked on?

Even more alarming, however, is that fact that many parents are not even aware that their child is being attacked. This article addresses why children bully, how to identify if your child is being bullied, and what your child can do to prevent or stop bullying.

Children bully because it gives them a sense of power and domination over others. The bottom line is that it makes them feel powerful. More often than not their parents have used power-assertive discipline at home or they have been bullied themselves (e.g., by schoolmates, siblings, etc.). Many bullies come from homes where the parents are cold or uninvolved. Bullies typically carry a great deal of internal anger, pain, insecurity, lack interpersonal skills, and show little remorse for hurting others.

A larger set of children are not direct bullies but rather are bystanders. These bystanders tease others to go along with the crowd. While these students typically express some guilt over their actions very few go against the crowd to stop the bullying. Victims are more often harassed by groups of students than a single "bully."

Boys and Girls differ in how they bully. Girls tend to engage in verbal bullying or relational aggression such as excluding someone from the group or spreading rumors about another person. Boys are more likely to engage in direct aggression such as physical fighting or verbal attacks.

That said, you may still be wondering, why my child? Your child did not cause the bullying. However, there are certain characteristics that victims of bullies often share. They are typically (but not always) withdrawn, anxious, timid, children who react to bullying with overt emotion (e.g., fear, crying). They give the bullies the reaction they want. Also, victims may be targeted for looking or acting differently. Body weight, style of dress, high/low intelligence, race, ethnicity, and lack of social skills (e.g., appearing intrusive) are all common characteristics of victims.

Even more important is identifying the signs that your child is being bullied. Engulfed in our hectic schedules, we, as parents, may not even be aware that our child is being bullied.

Here are some signs to look for:

he seems more withdrawn or fearful
he cannot name a friend or does not talk about a friend at school
he does not call or invite any friends over
he comes home with torn or dirty clothes
his money or personal items are frequently missing
he often complains of school related illnesses (e.g., stomachache, headache, etc.)
he has a loss of appetite or eats constantly
he has sleep disturbances
he "hates" school and does not want to go
he shows a decline in school performance
he demonstrates increased anger or self-destructive behavior (e.g., eating disorder, cutting on self, etc.)

It is important to keep in mind that being shy and having only a few friends is not, in and of itself, a cause for concern. Having one or two supportive friends can mitigate many of the negative effects of being picked on. Most children are picked on at school, for a short period, at one time or another. One friendship can give your child the confidence he needs to stand up to a bully if necessary.

If you suspect that your child is being bullied ask your child directly but try to stay neutral (cool) and not get overly emotional about the situation; otherwise your child may feel even more helpless. Tell him that no one has the right to make him feel badly about himself. Encourage your child to tell you about these incidents--listen and share the hurt with him. Assure him that he is not defective and that there are things he can do to prevent or stop the bullying.

Bullies have an ability to detect and prey on insecurity. Therefore, advise your child to stand tall, look the bully in the eye, use a firm voice and say, "You are being a bully and you need to knock it off. You are not funny." Tell him to stay calm, neutral and try not to show his fear. Practice this response at home with your child and encourage him to practice these responses in the mirror over and over until he feels comfortable and confident. Work on building his self-esteem through activities he is good at and by spending more time with supportive friends.

Also encourage your child to report the incident to a teacher or administrator he trusts. If there isn't anyone he trusts, offer to get involved. Administrators and teachers should promise discretion and anonymity.

No parent wants his or her child to be bullied. Bullying can go on for years and cause severe self-esteem problems. Be involved, empathetic, and constructive-- you can help your child prevent or stop bullying before it becomes a serious problem.

Bullied to Death - What happened to Phoebe?

I just read the cover story from February 22, 2010 issue of People Magazine

-- "Bullied To Death" -- and it broke my heart.

As a Martial Arts Instructors At Goshin Karate & Judo Academy we are commited to helping kids deal with this issue.

Suicide in South Hadley Bullied to Death?
By Liz McNeil

Phoebe Prince Had Beauty, Brains and Big Dreams. but Friends Say Relentless Taunting—and Vicious Smears on Facebook—by Some Girls at Her Massachusetts High School Led Phoebe to Kill Herself at 15

She picked out a black cocktail dress for the school dance—one with spaghetti straps and sequins, along with sparkly red shoes that reminded her of Dorothy's in The Wizard of Oz. A week before South Hadley High's cotillion, Phoebe Prince texted her friend Meghan Kennedy, bubbling with enthusiasm. "She said, 'I can't wait to walk around in this,'" Meghan, 15, recalls. "She was so excited." Several days later on Jan. 14, the 15-year-old was dead—found hanging in her closet by her little sister. "Everyone was just shocked," Meghan says. "I can't even explain the devastation."

So why did the beautiful girl, a recent transplant from Ireland who read Dante and dreamed of becoming a journalist, commit the ultimate self-destructive act? Friends say mean girls drove her to it—that Phoebe was relentlessly bullied in the classroom and online, where she was the target of insults and smears called out in the hallways and posted on Facebook. "Go kill yourself," students taunted. School district superintendent Gus Sayer confirms Phoebe was the victim of verbal and cyberbullying "intended to hurt her" but says she didn't report the behavior. While police pursue an investigation—criminal charges are seldom brought in bullying cases—school administrators say they have suspended several students, who now await a disciplinary hearing and could face expulsion. The school has also formed an antibullying task force. "Bullying is not tolerated at this school," Sayer says. Too little, too late, according to some parents who complain the 760-student public school has turned a blind eye to abusive behavior by students for years. "The bullies have gotten away with it," says Lisa Brouillard, 44, who says her daughter Becky, 17, was thrown into a locker and punched by one of Phoebe's tormentors a few days after her death. David Leonard, 53, says his daughter Nicole, 18, dropped out of South Hadley High last year because of relentless taunting by different students. "It was torture," Leonard says. "What happened to Phoebe—that could have been my daughter." Says Sayer: "Many times kids have been disciplined for bullying. We consider this a very serious problem."

For Phoebe—according to several close friends, some of whom declined to be named for fear of retribution—the problems began last fall, shortly after she moved from County Clare, Ireland, with her mother, Anne, a schoolteacher, and sister Lauren, 12, to South Hadley, a New England town of 17,000 that's home to Mount Holyoke College and a mix of upscale and working-class families.

Warm and outgoing, Phoebe quickly attracted notice. "All the guys wanted to talk to her," says a friend. "But a lot of girls were jealous." After she briefly dated a football player who was involved with another girl, female students started calling her "Irish whore," friends say; some posted insulting messages on their Facebook pages. Superintendent Sayer says the school's investigation shows the smears were "everywhere she turned. She kept bumping into certain kids, and they insulted her."

The harassment took a toll, and while she might not have formally reported it, friends say Phoebe hardly kept it a secret. Naturally bright but an indifferent student, she'd recently been spotted outside class, iPod in hand, crying. "A few times my teacher would talk to her and try to help," one student says. Another student tried to pick a fight after calling her a "ho." "Phoebe would tell me how scared she was," Meghan says. "She wasn't a tough girl." A few days before her death, friend Nick Shenas, 15, recalls, "she wasn't herself. She said it was too much to deal with."

Certainly Phoebe had other concerns. Always close to her father, Jeremy, a gardener, she was having a difficult time adjusting to life without him—accounts vary as to why her parents were no longer living together—after moving to the rented top floor of a two-story house in South Hadley. "She would talk about how much she missed her dad," Nick says; one friend described her as upset over the separation. Says a family friend in Ireland: "She was having ups and downs, but nothing to the extreme."

Or so everyone thought—until Jan. 14, when once again, friends say, Phoebe suffered a barrage of insults, even on her way home. That afternoon she plugged her phone into the wall—perhaps to show the world the text messages that had terrorized her. Kevin Miele, who operates an auto-detailing shop next door, watched a dozen police cars pull up to the house. "It was horrible," he says. "The mother was hysterical." Anne and Jeremy Prince have declined to speak publicly. But before leaving Ireland to join his family, Jeremy confided to a friend his hope that some "good could come of this, that Phoebe's death could have some meaning." That remained to be seen on Jan. 18, as family and friends poured into Beers and Story Funeral Home in South Hadley to pay their respects and have one last look at a young girl with so much promise—wearing a black party dress that would never see a dance

Is Your Kid Being Bullied?

The bullying Phoebe Prince endured is all too common. According to the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center, nearly 30 percent of students in grades 6 through 10 have experienced bullying, and these days much of it is happening online. Off of school property, cyberbullies are harder to monitor and discipline. So what's a worried parent to do? Stay tuned in, says Mayo Clinic child psychologist Dr. Bridget Biggs. "Look for changes. Do they seem deflated while they're online or suddenly not want go to school?" Above all, Biggs says, "Listen. You never know when your teen may need to talk." http://www.safeyouth.org/ or  http://www.isafe.org/

Karate School in North Phoenix - Promotes three to Brown Belt

I am proud to recommend to their Brown Belts

Danielle Brister
Matthew Torres
Darian Brill

The Meaning of the Brown Belt - 3rd Kyu

At this point the student has an understanding of their basics and developed deep roots in the Goshin Karate and Judo Academy principles.

Brown is known as an earthy color, such as dirt or soil. The brown belt signifies the soil in which the roots of mastery begin to take hold.

This brown signifies new soil never worked or perfected, never enriched or aerated.

The previous belts provide the seeds however they find themselves unwelcoming soil to foster growth.

Like the task of the farmer to tame the land, so does the student need to begin to their self, to remove the parasites, stones, and weeds. - To let in the Green of life, the Blue of the sky and the power of Purple to make this fertile ground.

This is as great a physical task as it is mental task for the student but no Mastery of the art can be attained without it any more than a seed can grow properly on unwelcome soil.

Phoenix Karate is teaching The Karate Kid to be healthly

Goshin Karate & Judo Academy in Scottsdale Arizona has made Healthy living a top priority. To eat better, train harder and live healthier, take your cue from GOSHIN KARATE & JUDO ACADEMY and commit to a new you.

Nine Steps toward HEALTHY EATING HABITS

Nothing is more discouraging than going on a diet. Plus, studies show that diets don't really work. What's important, they say, is to eat in a healthy way that supports an active lifestyle, like that of a martial artist or athlete. Follow these suggestions to improve your nutrition without going on a diet.

1. Eat the right amounts of vegetables. According to the Food Guide Pyramid for Children, kids under age 6 should have three servings of vegetables in a day. Kids over age 6 should have three-to-five servings of vegetables. Most vegetables are naturally low in fat and calories but high in nutrients that our body needs, including vitamins, fiber and potassium. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, eating your vegetables helps protect you against heart attacks and cancer, and even can help maintain your eyesight.

2. Eat the right amounts of fruits. According to the Food Guide Pyramid for Children, kids under age 6 should have two servings of fruits in a day. Kids over age 6 should have two-to-four servings of fruits. Fruits have many of the same nutrients as vegetables and also help satisfy that sweet tooth as a healthier alternative to candy. A serving of fruit is one piece, like a banana or an apple. (this sounds funny to me. Is it saying one serving of fruit is equal to one piece of candy?) Eating a banana after a Karate & Judo workout can replenish the potassium your muscles use, helping you get ready for your next class.

3. Drink more fluids. Kidshealth.org reports that when you're really thirsty, cold water is the number-one thirst-quencher. And there's a reason your school cafeteria offers cartons of milk. Kids need calcium to grow strong bones, and milk is a great source of this mineral. How much do kids need? Aim for three cups of milk per day, or its equivalent. Mix it up by serving milk and some other calcium-rich dairy foods.

4. Cut back on fast food meals. Eating a cheeseburger and fries from time to time can fit into a healthy eating plan, but fast food meals for kids need to be monitored by a parent to prevent over-eating. A cheeseburger and fries do provide some nutrients, but by super-sizing the meal, a child can take in more than 1,000 calories in a sitting.

5. Snack throughout the day. It's hard to believe, but eating more food that is good for your body will help you get fit quicker than if you eat less food and walk around hungry. When your tummy is grumbling, instead of reaching for the chips or cookies, try crackers and cheese, popcorn, pretzels or yogurt.

6. Listen to your body. According to Kidshealth.org, people sometimes keep eating even when they're full because they don't pay attention to their bodies. Learn to tell when your stomach is full. Don't rush through your meals--it can take 10 or 15 minutes for your stomach to register that you're eating and that it's getting full. Remember, that feeling of extreme fullness will slow you down and can lead to unhealthy weight gain.

7. Don't skip breakfast. If you skip breakfast, you're likely to become tired when your brain and body run low on fuel. Usually by mid-morning you are hungry and crabby, and a sour mood might make you more prone to unhealthy choices at lunch. Eating a good breakfast sets the tone for the rest of the day.

8. Take your vitamins. Supplements are not a substitute for good food, and they should never be used to justify a poor diet. If you're not eating well, take steps to improve your eating habits, along with taking a supplement. According to WebMD.com, "Any generic type of children's multivitamin (in chewable or liquid form) will do, unless your child has special needs." Since your diet may not provide all of the nutrients you need, taking a daily vitamin is typically a good choice to fill the gap.

9. Give yourself a break. Being healthy doesn't mean you can never have chocolate again! It's important that you deal with cravings as you take steps toward fitness and still enjoy the foods you love. Feel free to have some birthday cake--just don't have the biggest piece with the most icing. Don't treat it as a reward but rather enjoy it as an indulgence. Just be sure your healthy habits aren't forgotten.

What Parents Can Do to help their children

Keep healthy food around the house. Being hungry is not a crime, but it's what you and your child choose to fight that hunger that can create bad choices.

Find healthy foods you and your child like. To find out what food your child enjoys and is most likely to eat, ask him or her to "grade" the different choices, suggests WebMD.com. That gets your child involved in the process of making healthy choices he or she can live with. If your child doesn't like broccoli, try green beans. Play with different recipes and find things that are tasty and healthy.

Don't reward your child with food. Dessert shouldn't be the reward after a healthy dinner. Instead, reward your child with playtime in the park or a similar activity that supports a healthy lifestyle.

The Way of the Warrior - Samurai - Bushi

Dana Abbott "The Samurai Guy"& Roger Boggs

The samurai (or bushi) were the members of the military class, the Japanese warriors.

Samurai employed a range of weapons such as bows and arrows, spears and guns; but their most famous weapon and their symbol was the sword.

Samurai were supposed to lead their lives according to the ethic code of bushido ("the way of the warrior"). Strongly Confucian in nature, Bushido stressed concepts such as loyalty to one's master, self discipline and respectful, ethical behavior.

After a defeat, some samurai chose to commit ritual suicide (seppuku) by cutting their abdomen rather than being captured or dying a dishonorable death.

Bushido, literally translated "Way of the Warrior," developed in Japan between the Heian and Tokugawa Ages (9th-12th century). It was a code and way of life for Samurai, a class of warriors similar to the medieval knights of Europe. It was influenced by Zen and Confucianism, two different schools of thought of those periods. Bushido is not unlike the chivalry and codes of the European knights. "It puts emphasis on loyalty, self sacrifice, justice, sense of shame, refined manners, purity, modesty, frugality, martial spirit, honor and affection"

Seven virtues of Bushidō

The Bushidō code is typified by seven virtues:

Rectitude (義, gi?)
Courage (勇, yuu?)
Benevolence (仁, jin?)
Respect (礼, rei?)
Honesty (誠, makoto or ?, 信) shin
Honour (誉, yo?)
Loyalty (忠, chuu?)

Associated virtues
Filial piety (孝, kō?)
Wisdom (智, chi?)
Care for the aged (悌, tei?)

The great philosopher Confucius (Kong Fu Zi) lived in China from 551 to 479 BC.

Confucianism is one of the three traditional Chinese religions besides Taoism and Buddhism. According to early Japanese writings, it was introduced to Japan via Korea in the year 285 AD. Some of the most important Confucian principles are humanity, loyality, morality and consideration on an individual and political level.

United State Judo Association - USJA President Resigns

One of my favorite professors had a sign in her office, "No matter how far you've gone down the wrong road, turn back."

For twelve years, I have been a member of a committee or board of one judo organization or another. Recently, when Jim Pedro, Sr. resigned from the United States Judo Association Board of Directors in disgust, shortly after Dr. Martin Bregman resigned from the promotion board, it became clear to me that the infighting, petty jealousies and personal agendas had degenerated to such a point that it would be impossible for me to work with the United States Judo Association Board. When two of the men I most admire resign, it is obvious that something is drastically wrong.

One meaning of resignation is acceptance of the inevitable. It is clear to me that the continuing failure of this board to work together is inevitable. Therefore, I have joined the vice-president in resignation from the USJA Board.

I have met many great people running judo programs throughout the country and I am grateful for that opportunity.

What my experience tells me is that if judo is to survive as a viable sport in this country it will be despite our national organizations rather than because of them.

AnnMaria R. De Mars , Ph.D.

Alice Waters' Edible Schoolyard

Principles of Edible Education

This is wonderful!

Lets hope that this initiative grows
(no pun intended) by leaps and bounds!

Food is an Academic Subject
A school garden, kitchen, and cafeteria are integral to the core academic mission of the school, so that ecology and gastronomy help bring alive every subject, from reading and writing to science and art.

School Provides Lunch for Every Child
From preschool through high school, every child is served a wholesome, delicious meal, every day. Good food is a right not a privilege. Providing it every day brings children into a positive relationship with their health, their community, and the environment.

Schools Support Farms
School cafeterias buy seasonally fresh food from local, sustainable farms and ranches, not only for reasons of health and education, but as a way of strengthening local food economies.

Children Learn by Doing
Hands-on education, in which the children themselves do the work in the vegetable beds and on the cutting boards, awakens their senses and opens their minds, both to their core academic subjects and to the world around them.

Beauty is a Language
A beautifully prepared environment, where deliberate thought has gone into everything from the garden paths to the plates on the tables, communicates to children that we care about them.

Dana Abbott "The Samurai Guy" comes to Goshin Karate

Dana Abbott – The Samurai guy comes to Goshin Karate & Judo Academy April 12th at 7:45pm

Black Belt Hall of Fame 7th degree Shihan Dana Abbott wants to offer you the opportunity of experiencing "The Ultimate Physical Game of Chess" through the knowledge of the Samurai sword. You will participate in a semi-private exciting and informative classes. You will be doing something out of your "daily routine" while focusing your mind and body to work as one. Below is a sample of what will be taught during your class.

You begin your class with Japanese formalities that have been practiced for eons. These formalities will be practiced both in standing and kneeling positions. During this time you will also learn interesting points of culture and the way of the sword from myself who lived in Japan for 15 years.

Next you will do some basic warm-ups with sword in hand using centuries old patterns. After you have gone through this section you will then practice age old techniques taught through pre-arranged forms called kata. The kata series you will first practice will be the Japanese Military Toyama style, the Seitei and kumitachi series developed by the Japanese Department of Education.

Over time you will being to duplicate the many katas which we will break down into individual teachniques and then dwell on those until your rote memory has been set in. These techniques will be practiced using steel, wood, bamboo and synthetics, then polished until they can be executed at full speed. After you have fought, sparred and trained at full speed and power you will be more focused.

During the latter part of your class you will apply your newly found techniques in a simple but effective manner. You will be surprised to experience your new awareness and the ability to defend yourself both mentally and physically.

One of the favorites of this class is test cutting. Test cutting involves actual hands on cutting of various objects using the angles and techniques you have learned. At the end of class you will be moving toward the experience of a samurai warrior in the 21st century.

First Karate School in Arizona

ROBERT A. TRIAS
The Father of American Karate

Robert A. Trias was born on March 18,1922. At the beginning of World War II Robert A. Trias was called upon to serve his country in the United States Navy. In 1942 he was stationed in the Solomon Islands. While he was training for the South Pacific middleweight boxing championship, he met a man who would set him on the path to a remarkable life of monumental accomplishments. This man was T'ung Gee Hsing. Hsing had traveled to the Solomn Islands from Okinawa in 1940, where he had trained with Choki Motobu.

Hsing was fascinated with American boxing and he began to frequent the gym where Master Trias was training. He pestered Trias day after day to spar with him, until one day Trias agreed. In an interview for Black Belt Magazine Master Trias recounts the event. "He was just a tiny little guy, said Trias, and I didn't want to spar with him, but he kept on persisting until I said yes. I called all my friends to see me kill this little man and I asked him if he wanted to spar with gloves and he said it really didn't matter.

Well, before you know it, he was giving me the biggest thrashing of my life and I was really embarrassed. He kept pointing out how he could easily kill me if he wanted and right there and then, I asked him to teach me." Master Trias began training with T'ung Gee Hsing, and was awarded his first degree black belt on July 10, 1943.

Later in 1944, he was also able to train with Hoy Yuan Ping in Singapore. In 1945 he returned to the United States and introduced karate to America. In 1946 Master Trias opened the first karate school in America in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1948 he founded the United States Karate Association which became the largest karate organization in the world. He was also responsible for the following first accomplishments in America.

1955 - Wrote the first rules for karate competition.
1955 - Conducted the first karate tournament.
1958 - Wrote the first textbook.
1959 - Made the first instructional film.
1963 - Conducted the first world karate championships.
1968 - Conducted the first professional karate tournament.

His literary works are: "The Hand is My Sword", "Karate is My Life", "The Methods of Shuri-ryu", "The Pinnacle of Karate", and "The Supreme Way"..

Karate Kids in Scottsdale eating healthly

 Super-Healing Powers

Kiwifruit

This tiny, nutrient-dense fruit packs an amazing amount of vitamin C (double the amount found in oranges), has more fiber than apples, and beats bananas as a high-potassium food. The unique blend of phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals found in kiwifruit helps protect against heart disease, stroke, cancer, and respiratory disease. Kiwifruit's natural blood-thinning properties work without the side effects of aspirin and support vascular health by reducing the formation of spontaneous blood clots, lowering LDL cholesterol, and reducing blood pressure. Multiple studies have shown that kiwifruit not only reduce oxidative stress and damage to DNA but also prompt damaged cells to repair themselves.

Kiwifruit are often prescribed as part of a dietary regimen to battle cancer and heart disease, and in Chinese medicine they are used to accelerate the healing of wounds and sores.

How much: Aim to eat one to two kiwifruit a day while they're in season, for the best taste and nutrition. California-grown kiwifruit are in season from October through May, and New Zealand kiwifruit are available between April and November.

Tips: Kiwifruit contain enzymes that activate once you cut the fruit, causing the flesh to tenderize. So if you're making a fruit salad, cut the kiwifruit last.

The riper the kiwifruit, the greater the antioxidant power, so let them ripen before you dig in.

Goshin Karate & Judo Acdemy is "Safe Place"

Every Karate School in America should become a Safe Place.

I just saw the sign and said, "I need to be involved in this program"

Safe Place is a place that is willing to help any youth in crisis or at risk. This community collaboration program, operated by youth shelters or youth serving agencies make it possible for any youth to access help at locations including fast food restaurants, convenience stores, fire stations, libraries, karate schools/martial arts academys and city buses which display the Safe Place sign. Youth can easily find help at Safe Place sites in their own neighborhood whenever they need it. Safe Place connects youth to immediate help and safety and offers supportive services to both youth and their families.

Until our streets are safe...
Until families can understand each other...
Until drugs and violence disappear...
Until no young person needs to run away or feel afraid...

There must be Safe Place.

Why Kids Need Safe Place
Kids experience many difficult situations to include problems at home, problems at school, trouble with peers, being locked out of the house, riding with an unsafe driver, or being in a dangerous situation on a date.

Kids also leave home for many reasons such as to escape abuse or neglect, drug or alcohol problems of family members, family members who make them leave or maybe they feel they just don't belong. Many times leaving home is not a choice they want to make. Yet national agencies estimate that over one million young people run away from home each year.

No matter what the reason, kids do have a safer alternative. They can go to any designated Safe Place site to get immediate help. These young people deserve access to a Safe Place and a chance to think through their problems with the support of caring adults.

Safe Place is a national youth outreach program that educates thousands of young people every year about the dangers of running away or trying to resolve difficult, threatening situations on their own. This easily replicated community initiative involves the whole community to provide safe havens and resources for youth in crisis.
