Targeting Life Skills Model - Phoenix Karate

Incorporating developmentally-appropriate learning opportunities to assess impact of life skill development.

Youth development is a process of mental, physical, social and emotional growth during which young people prepare to live a productive and satisfying life within the customs and regulations of their society. People who develop programs and curricula for youth are in the business of providing educational opportunities through which youth can learn information and develop skills they need.

Youth development experiences of high quality don't just happen. The best ones are carefully planned (a) to encourage life skill development while delivering subject matter content and (b) to achieve specific results. It has become increasingly important to be accountable for resources expended by documenting program impact. By clearly stating desired changes as program objectives, youth development experiences can be evaluated more effectively to determine if the program succeeded in making the intended difference in the lives of youth.

A skill is a learned ability to do something well. Life skills are abilities individuals can learn that will help them to be successful in living a productive and satisfying life. In the Targeting Life Skills (TLS) Model categories of life skills are identified and divided on the basis of the familiar four H's from the 4-H Clover that represent Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. Two general categories of skills are included under each of the four headings.

The goal of youth programming is to provide developmentally appropriate opportunities for young people to experience life skills, to practice them until they are learned, and be able to use them as necessary throughout a lifetime. Through the experiential learning process, youth internalize the knowledge and gain the ability to apply the skills appropriately.

The TLS Model

The TLS Model is intended to be inclusive for all possible life skills. The terminology in the TLS Model is not the same as that used in any one other current list of life skills. By being generic, the model allows those developing curriculum to incorporate any specific life skill that youth programmers may wish to address using whichever terminology is descriptive of that skill.

The purpose of the TLS Model is to provide a way to simplify coordination of life skill development with ages and stages tasks so programs will be developmentally appropriate and more effective in achieving identified outcomes. For too long these strategies have been treated separately when describing aspects of youth development. Life skill development is mapped sequentially over four age groupings of youth to indicate a continuum of growth. This continuum will guide planners in identifying an appropriate developmental level for content delivery. By assigning developmentally appropriate tasks to specific life skills, the TLS Model has the potential to greatly improve the possibility of achieving measurable program success in youth development.

There is not complete agreement on the specific life skills needed by youth, or on a set of desired behaviors that ensure success in life. It is easier to identify the problem behaviors that occur when the youth do not reach the expected societal goals. By reviewing a number of models proposed by several authors, certain consistent categories of competencies emerged. These categories can be used as the basis of life skill development. Authors generally agree that life skills are learned through experience. Life skills often must be practiced over and over before mastery is achieved.

Self Defense Training for Kids in Phoenix Arizona

Goshin in Japanese means  "protection of the body" - Goshin means - "Self Defense"

Self Defense Training for kids in Scottsdale Arizona

Overview

Self-defense training can help kids not only avoid being approached or attacked by a stranger, but also to understand dangerous and inappropriate situations involving people that they know. A kids' self-defense class may use role playing, games and practice to teach kids how to avoid risky situations and get out of a situation that becomes dangerous.

Self-Defense Classes
Parents can enroll their children in a kids' self-defense class at a local Martial Arts School….like Goshin Karate & Judo Academy or at The Y. TeensHealth suggests schools as another potential resource for self defense training since they sometimes sponsor self-defense classes for children through the school counseling or physical education programs. Community hospitals and community recreation centers are other potential class sites, as well as martial arts studios that offer kids' self-defense training workshops or as part of their martial arts classes.

Prevention
Self-defense training teaches kids to avoid situations in which they might become the victim of an attack. Kidpower recommends kids' self-defense training teach kids to be aware of their surroundings and to appear calm and confident to others, which can reduce risk of an attack. The National Crime Prevention Council also recommends staying in well-lit areas and always going out in groups rather than alone.

De-Escalation
According to TeensHealth, kids can use de-escalation to avoid physical violence, for example by giving a robber their money instead of trying to fight. De-escalation can also help kids avoid bullying if they remain calm, don't lose their temper when a bully taunts them and try to redirect the bully's attention.

Self-Defense Tools
While many people think of pepper spray as a self-defense tool to have on hand, TeensHealth recommends a dog of any size can also be a useful tool in preventing an attack because attackers know that a dog will likely bark and attract attention. Having a cell phone out or talking on your phone can also reduce your risk of being attacked. Here at Goshin Karate and Judo Academy we also suggests that kids' self-defense training include using their voices to shout specific words like "help" and "police" to draw attention to themselves in an attack situation. The National Crime Prevention Council recommends teaching kids the self defense strategy of "No, Go, Yell, Tell"---say no to strangers, run away, yell as loud as they can and tell a trusted adult about what happened.

Decision Making
Self-defense training for kids should teach kids how to assess a situation and make a decision about how to get away from an attack. As Kidpower suggests, self-defense training should make kids feel confident about their ability to take charge of a situation and teach them where to go for help when they feel in danger.

Breaking Away
Self-defense training should teach kids techniques to use to get away from an attacker's grasp on their arms, clothing or entire body. Kids should have practice using the techniques on an adult so that they feel confident using the skills in real life

Free Bully Prevention Seminar - Scottsdale Arizona

What works to stop bullying?

Free Bully Prevention Seminar - January 29th from 2 - 3:30pm at Goshin Karate & Judo Academy - Scottsdale Arizona

We've had a year of polarized debate about bullying. On one side we have those who believe the bullying that resulted in the suicide of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi is a form of anti-gay discrimination and that those who disagree are homophobes. On the other side are those who are convinced that liberals and gay rights groups are advancing some kind of "homosexual agenda" under the guise of an anti-bullying curriculum.

One thing is clear: We're not going to stop bullying in our schools until we stop bullying each other over how to address the problem. Let's make a New Year's pledge to talk about bullying the way we'd like to see our kids talk to each other. Let's focus on proven strategies that can accomplish what all people of goodwill want: an end to the harassment of vulnerable children.

Here's what we know works to reduce bullying in schools:
-- Educating, not just punishing, the perpetrators
-- Training bystanders to be allies of the victim
-- Not allowing the isolation or taunting of any child for any reason.

But these simple steps seem not to satisfy those who must fit bullying into their preconceived ideas about what is wrong with American education. They tend to be divided into two camps:

Camp 1: Bullying is an anti-social, aggressive act by an isolated individual, which should be dealt with as an individual behavioral offense by punishing the bully. The call for more of a systemic response is just an excuse to smuggle a homosexual or other left-wing "tolerance agenda" into the schools.

Camp 2: Bullying is all about the culture of the school, and school culture is a reflection of intolerance in the larger society. What's called for is a complete re-socialization of the students through a tolerance curriculum.

Were there any evidence supporting either of these positions, we might be able to declare which camp is right and then proceed to conquer bullying. But in fact, a long history of research on bullying shows neither is an effective approach.
Bullies do, indeed, engage in anti-social behavior. They need to be confronted with that behavior and told why it is inappropriate, and they need to experience negative consequences for what they have done.

But punishing them is not enough. Children need to be told what they should have done instead of bullying, and they need to commit to doing that in the future. Unless aggressive children go through this kind of process, their anti-social behavior will increase rather than decrease.

By the same token, a strategy of re-socialization is also insufficient. Yes, bullies often reflect the prejudices and intolerance of the larger society. But a re-socialization approach assumes that we can change people and their beliefs in a way that no social science tells us we can do. Most of the anti-bullying programs based on re-socialization have no social science behind them; there's no valid research that suggests that they are helpful.

Unlike approaches based on ideology, successful anti-bullying programs are quite practical and concrete: They use anonymous surveys to sample the current climate within the school. Then they go about changing the culture of the school by working primarily on bystander behavior. They make it OK for students to report bullying by altering the notion of what students consider tattling.

Successful anti-bullying efforts address precursor behaviors to bullying, like exclusion, with rules that children understand - "You can't say, 'You can't play.' " And, while good programs do not blame the victims, they do include social skills instruction for children who are picked on to help reduce the chances they will continue to be victimized

Most important, successful programs change the bystander behavior of adults. They challenge false beliefs among teachers and parents about the nature of bullying - that being bullied "builds character," that "boys will be boys." In short, they make clear that adults must not stand by when bullying takes place.

None of these components of a successful anti-bullying program is particularly difficult to learn or expensive to implement. What these programs do require, though, is for both camps in the debate to put their ideologies aside long enough to put the proven strategies to work.
Steve Johnson, a former teacher and principal, is director of character education at Santa Clara University's Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. He is the creator of the Character-Based Literacy Curriculum, which is widely used in California counties.

Get Fit - Get Active - Let's Move

Get Active

Physical activity is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. In combination with healthy eating, it can help prevent a range of chronic diseases, including heart disease, cancer, and stroke, the three leading causes of death. Physical activity helps control weight, builds lean muscle, reduces fat, promotes strong bone, muscle and joint development, and decreases the risk of obesity. Children need 60 minutes of active and vigorous play every day to grow up to a healthy weight.

If this sounds like a lot, consider that 8-18 year-olds devote an average of 7 1/2 hours to using entertainment media including TV, computers, video games, cell phones and movies in a typical day, and only a third of high school students get the recommended levels of physical activity. To increase physical activity, today’s children need safe routes to walk and ride to school, parks, playgrounds and community centers where they can play after school and be active in sports, dance or fitness programs that are exciting and challenging to keep them engaged.

~~~~~
Here are Goshin Karate & Judo Academy we encourage kids to be physically active, both in and out of school, and join in the fun to set a good example. Studies show that kids who believe they are competent and have the skills to be physically active are more likely to be active. Those who feel supported by friends and families or are surrounded by others interested in physical activity, are more likely to participate.
Kids should participate in physical activity for at least 60 minutes every day, but it doesn't have to occur at once. It all adds up! And remember, sleep is an essential part of living an active life. A recent study found that with each extra hour of sleep, the risk of a child's being overweight or obese dropped by 9 percent.
Parents you can Help
Give children toys that encourage physical activity like balls, kites, and jump ropes.
Encourage children to join a sports team or try a new physical activity like Karate, Judo  or Martial Arts.
Limit TV time and keep the TV out of a child’s bedroom.
Facilitate a safe walk to and from school once a week.
Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
Walk around the block after a meal.
Make a new house rule: no sitting still during television commercials.
Find time to spend together with a fun activity: family park day, swim day or bike day.
Issue a family challenge to see who can be the first to achieve a "Presidential Active Lifestyle Award" by committing to physical activity five days a week, for six weeks. Adults and children can both receive the award!
Talk to the principal or write a letter to the district superintendent if you think there should be more physical education at school.
Encourage schools to hold recess prior to lunch to encourage physical activity before mealtime.
Volunteer to help with after-school physical activity programs or sports teams.
Be sure that children get the sleep they need. Most children under age 5 need to sleep for 11 hours or more per day, children age 5 to 10 need 10 hours of sleep or more per day, and children over age 10 need at least 9 hours per day.
Scottsdale Fitness - Gyms will not make you less Fat!
Going to the Gym Will Not Make You less Fat
Ready to start the week off on a down note? Yes?! Well, consider this: all of that time and money you invest in gym memberships and personal trainers may actually be useless in regards to losing weight/staying slim!
John Cloud spoke to a group of researchers at Louisiana State University (Geaux Tigers!) who claim that regular exercise may actually make it harder for people to lose weight. How? Because gym exercise makes us hungrier, which often leads to an increase in the consumption of food, much of which is not of the healthy variety by mere virtue of the era in which we live, as many of our foods are processed and filled with all sorts of things the human body has difficulty breaking down.
The researchers at LSU also found that exercising in a gym often also leads to increased levels of inactivity during the periods of time when we aren't at the gym. For instance, someone who spent an hour on the stairmaster is more inclined to take an elevator over the stairs, or take a cab instead of walking to a destination, either out of fatigue or an "I worked out today so I deserve this" sense of entitlement.
Dr. Timothy Church, LSU's "chair in health wisdom," and his team came to their conclusions after conducting an extensive study:
Church's team randomly assigned into four groups 464 overweight women who didn't regularly exercise. Women in three of the groups were asked to work out with a personal trainer for 72 min., 136 min., and 194 min. per week, respectively, for six months. Women in the fourth cluster, the control group, were told to maintain their usual physical-activity routines. All the women were asked not to change their dietary habits and to fill out monthly medical-symptom questionnaires.
The findings were surprising. On average, the women in all the groups, even the control group, lost weight, but the women who exercised - sweating it out with a trainer several days a week for six months - did not lose significantly more weight than the control subjects did. (The control-group women may have lost weight because they were filling out those regular health forms, which may have prompted them to consume fewer doughnuts.) Some of the women in each of the four groups actually gained weight, some more than 10 lb. each.
Unfortunately, the piece doesn't disclose what types exercise (Weights? Running? Yoga?) the women in the three active groups participated regularly in, nor does it go into detail about the specifics of their diets (Carb-heavy? Lean proteins?), but really, doesn't this all just confirm something we all already know, that the key to losing weight is to burn more calories than you consume? Is it really all that complicated?
Nevertheless, if the results of this study have got you down, fear not — it's a virtual guarantee that another study will come along in the next few months to directly contradict all of the findings in this one. It's just the way things go.
Phoenix Karate Teacher - Christmas Jars
Start a New Family Holiday Tradition
and give an Anonymous Money Jar
A Christmas Jar or Holiday Money Jar is a great new tradition to help spread the holiday spirit and encourage random acts of kindness. Consider starting a new family tradition this year, pass on the spirit of the holiday and give a money jar anonymously to someone who could really use one.
The Christmas Jar tradition started several years ago by author Jason F. Wright with his family. He went on to publish his family's idea in the book Christmas Jars which became a New York Times Best Selling Book and a new Christmas Classic.
I have a jar filled with change if you know a family that needs some help this Holiday season
If you are looking for ways to create holiday memories with your children and a tradition that they can carry on for years to come, read more about the Christmas Jar, Anonymous Holiday Money Jar or if you want to be politically correct, the Ramahanukwanzmas Jar.
Who will receive yours Christmas Jar in 2010?
Chore Chart or a Check List for The Karate Kids
Chore Chart or a Check List for Kids
When I was young…. We had chores… I was the outside guy. I took the garbage out. I cleaned up after the dog. mowed the grass. I raked the leafs. I weeded the garden. I shoveled the snow. --- Life was easy when I was young. I loved it....
Have you considered a chore chart? I call it a “Behavior and Responsibility check list” --- because a chore sounds like a job and a check list sound like a responsibility – something you are suppose to do.
Kid’s check lists/Chore chart are some of the most helpful little parenting tools you can use in your home.
HERE IS OUR CHECK LIST - http://www.goshinkarate.com/acrobat%20files/2008/Behaviors%20and%20Responsibility%20chart.pdf
Are you skeptical that your kids will actually use a check list? You're not alone. Many parents don't bother trying to implement a chore chart/check list system because they don't think that the check list will get any use. Other parents have tried to set up systems in the past, only to have kid's ignore them. Want to get your children to really use a check list. Here are some tips that can help.
1. Let kids help plan the system.
So you have visions of the perfect chart in your head? Chances are it doesn't fit with the picture your kids have. To really get your child to buy into the system, let your kids have some age-appropriate input. Ask them questions about how the system should work. When is the deadline to complete chores? Where will the Behavior and Responsibility check list be located? Can kids mark off their own behaviors for parents to check later? Letting kids have even the smallest amount of input helps make them feel like the check list belongs to them, too.
2. Tie responsibilities to something.
If there are no positive (preferred) or negative consequences for completing or not completing a task, then there's no incentive to get them done. Whether you choose to tie completing projects to an allowance, a fun activity, or other incentive, it needs to be tied to something.
3. Offer a training period.
Give a little on the job training for jobs that might be more difficult. During this time, you may be helping or demonstrating how to do what’s expected, but you're really lessening your load in the long run. A training period lets you show your children how things should look when it is completed.
4. Don't overwhelm children with to many projects.
Make sure that what you are asking them to do is possible. Home tasks should be age appropriate and able to be completed in a normal amount of time. You need to distribute responsibilities according to age and ability, so that everyone is completing a fair amount of work. Overwhelmed kids won't learn to do a good job. And soon chores will become a huge burden instead of a normal brief part of their day.
5. Make it fun.
Well, as fun as chores can be. Try cartoon character, stickers, or bright colors. Some kids will appreciate getting to color in a box or place their own sticker on a chart. I'm often surprised by how much older kids are willing to do for a cartoon sticker.
6. Surprise the kids.
To make sure they'll actually check the chart. Include notes or small surprises near the chart occasionally. One of my friends sometimes substitutes fun items on her chore chart/check list, so that "vacuum the living room", might be followed by "Watch 30 minutes of television" just to change up the routine. Kids love these occasional surprises.
7. Offer some choices.
Try offering choices of responsibilities for kids who are super reluctant. Offering kids a choice between two chores/task (I used to give my kids choices) can give them ownership of their job. If s task choice isn't practical, try giving children the option of the order of what you expect, or what cleaning supplies they'd like to use. A little choice goes a long way.
8. Start young.
Even small children can be responsible for small chores. Children who watch mommy or daddy clean up all the messes in the house, learn that cleaning up is for grown-ups, instead of for everyone. We've got an edge with small children, because they are often so excited to help at anything, that they'll be happy to help with chores.
9. Let them mess up.
One of the best ways to get your children to pay attention to the chore chart, is to allow them to ignore it, and receive the consequences that come from not doing their chores. It seems harsh, but for my kids, staying upstairs in their room cleaning while everyone who completed their chores plays video games downstairs, is a huge motivator to complete the chart. Don't step in and save a child from the age appropriate consequences just because you don't want them to miss out. It's a hard lesson, but a powerful one.
10.Change the chart up.
The same chores day after day, get old. Don't be afraid to substitute in some new chores along with daily basics. Your children will get the opportunity to learn how to do new things and getting bored with chores won't happen as quickly.
Phoenix Karate School teacher shares - "THE DASH"
The Dash by Linda Ellis
There was a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end
He noted that first came her date of her birth
And spoke the following date with tears
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years
For that dash stands for all the time
That she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not how much we own;
The cars the house the cash
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard.
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.
We'd be less quick to anger
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we've never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.
So when your eulogy is being read
With your lifes actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?
Cos that dash stands for all the time
That you spent alive on earth
And only those who loved you
Know what that little line is worth
It matters not how much you own
The cars the house the cash
What matters is how you live and love
And how you spend your dash
What matters is how you live and love
And how you spend your dash.
