Sensei Boggs sings - No one likes a bully song....

NO ONE LIKES A BULLY

Words- Sam Francis, Gary Francis
Music- Gary Francis

Are you critical of things that people say?
Do you have a ‘temper tantrum’ when things don't go your way?
Do you lose control when arguments arise?
Have you picked on smaller kids who might not be your size?
If violence is a part of what you do
You really ought to listen up, this message is for you!

CHORUS
No one likes a ‘bully’
It just isn’t cool.
When you pick on others
You become the fool
Learn to talk it out and compromise
When you disagree.
Cause, if you want some friends around,
A friend you’ll have to be!

Have you brought a tear to someone else’s eye
By pointing out their weaknesses
As they go walking by?
Have you ever stopped and asked the question,’ why’
You would feel real ‘big’ inside to make somebody cry?
If violence is a part of what you do
You really ought to listen up, this message is for you!

CHORUS

(Bridge)
Be polite, and have some fun
Make a friend or two.
When you try to help someone
It comes back to you.

CHORUS

(Tag)
If you want some friends around,
A friend you’ll have to be!

Be The Change - Volunteer
Serve A Thon for Schools

Mark your calendar! HandsOn Greater Phoenix is pleased to announce that our 18th Annual Serve A Thon for Schools, presented by the University of Phoenix, will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2011. Roll up your sleeves and prepare for a day of painting, planting and revitalization! Over 1500 volunteers will spend the morning making much-needed repairs and improvements to under-resourced Valley schools while raising funds to support the vital programs HandsOn manages year-round.

We ask each volunteer to pay a $20 registration fee, which allows us to provide project supplies for the schools and water, snacks and t-shirts for volunteers (children ages 12 and under are not required to pay for registration).

How will YOU help this year?

We are currently recruiting:

Site Captains - Lead corporate groups and volunteer teams in service. Manage supplies, delegate tasks, answer questions, and guarantee that Serve A Thon is a great experience for schools and volunteers alike!

Skilled Volunteers - Our volunteer muralists, gardeners and carpenters are crucial to the success of our projects. Lend your talents to our efforts and restore school pride on Valley campuses!

Saying Good Bye to Mr. A

Saying Good Bye to Mr. A - Mr. Mike Anderson.....

"Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans." --- John Lennon

Here's what I wanted to tell you today. GET A LIFE! A real life! -- Not a manic pursuit of the next promotion, the bigger paycheck, the larger house. Do you think you would care so very much about those things if you were diagnosis with cancer?

Get a life in which you notice the star in the sky, a life in which you stop and watch how a red-tailed hawk circles over the mountains tops in Carefree, Arizona.. Get a life in which you are not alone. Find people you love, and who love you.

And remember that love is not leisure, it is work. Pick up the phone. Send an e-mail. Write a letter. Get a life in which you are generous. And realize that life is the best thing ever, and that you have no business taking it for granted. Care so deeply about its goodness that you want to spread it around. Take money you would have spent on beers and give it to charity. Work in a soup kitchen. Be a big brother or sister. All of you want to do well. But if you do not do good things, then doing well will never be enough. It is so easy to waste our lives, our days, our hours, and our minutes. It is so easy to take for granted the color of our kids' eyes, the way the melody in a symphony rises and falls and disappears and rises again. It is so easy to exist instead of to live.

Over the years I have learned to live. Something happened to me, something that changed my life in ways that, if I had my way, it would never have been changed at all. And what I learned from it is what, on that day March 27th 2008, on the day that Mr. Anderson "Mr. A" passed away... it seemed to be the hardest lesson of all. I learned to love the journey, not the destination. I learned that it is not a dress rehearsal, and that today is the only guarantee you get. I learned to look at all the good in the world and try to give some of it back because I believed in it, completely and utterly. And I tried to do that, in part, by telling others what I have learned.

Learn to be happy. And think of life as a terminal illness, because if you do, you will live it with joy and passion, as it ought to be lived.

Thanks Mr. A – I miss you

Consequences - Punishment - What's the difference?

Punishment - Consequences…. What is the difference?

What is the difference between punishment and consequence? The goal of discipline is to promote a change of heart, which produces a change of actions. Punishment is not a teacher. Effective discipline does not simply punish. Consequences teach the effects of the inevitable relationship between choice and consequence. Denying children of the experience of consequences in their youth, sets them up to feel victimized by the natural, unavoidable consequences of their choices in adulthood.

Healthy consequences are:

Purpose driven. Denying a privilege because a responsibility or commitment is not fulfilled is a punishment. Denying a privilege until a responsibility or commitment is addressed and holding the individual accountable to fulfill their commitments and responsibilities is a consequence.

Unemotional. Punishments are often formulated in the heat of the moment and may be motivated by anger and other negative emotions. Consequences are established under calm circumstances, preferably prior to an offense. In those times when a suitable consequence has not been predetermined, it is best to take some time to calmly consider an appropriate consequence for the misconduct.

Appropriate. Appropriate consequences relate to the misconduct. Removing television privileges from a child that is disrespectful is a dead end punishment. Assigning a 1-2 page paper that is to be written during TV viewing time about the importance of treating people with respect is a consequence.

Clear. A clear explanation is vital. Lecturing and reminding an individual of their laundry list of mistakes and times of misconduct is a punishment. Offering a clear explanation between their misconduct and the effects of their behavior on themselves and others is effective discipline.

Certain. Effective discipline chooses the impact of certainty over severity. People, especially children, are more likely to submit to and learn from a consistent discipline process. Consistency makes consequences logical.

Consistent. Consistency is the glue that holds a discipline strategy together. Remember, the goal is to teach the inevitable link be choice and consequence. This lesson is lost when it is not modeled consistently.

Prevention not punishment…. Punishment versus natural consequences…. Give child a way to make amends…. Teach them the problem-solving skill…..

Black Belts - Meaning

What Does a Black Belt Really Mean?

One of the questions most often asked of martial artists is, "How long does it take to get a black belt?"

There are many different answers to this question. Most people want to hear that it takes just a year or two of attendance in class to get a black belt. Misconceptions about what a black belt is tend to give students unrealistic expectations. At the same time, there is almost a superhuman and mythical character associated with black belts that tends to inflate the ego of those not properly prepared by their training.

The general public today sees black belts worn by very young children, contracts at martial arts schools that guarantee a black belt within a short time, mail-order black belts for sale in martial arts magazines, celebrities with honorary black belts, and demonstrations of black belt skill involving walking on nails, swallowing swords and other feats. This raises general questions about the meaning of the black belt, and threatens the legitimacy of all martial arts ranks.

The founder of Judo, Jigoro Kano, created the rank system used by almost all modern martial arts. The black belt was the first rank he created to signify completion of the first step of training, and it was the first time a belt rank was awarded in martial arts. At the time it replaced the traditional scrolls or diplomas used in older martial arts. Essentially it was a symbol of a student's graduation to another step in training. Similar to other forms of graduation, a Judo rank is a recognition of accomplishment, but it is the education and training itself that is important.

To get a black belt you simply find a good teacher and begin training. A school in a convenient location helps so you can attend regularly. A wide range of serious training partners also helps. But most importantly you must devote yourself to your practice and work hard. It is not easy, but it is a step-by-step training process and someday, who knows when, it may come. It may take a few years, it may take ten years, or you may never achieve it. A candidate for black belt will realize that the belt is not as important as the lessons learned along the way.

If you think you deserve a black belt, you are probably a long way from reaching this rank. Strive to retain a sense of humility, and refrain from thinking "I am better than so-and-so". You cannot compare your struggle or achievements with other peoples'. This is why ranks are earned by the student, but awarded by the sensei (instructor). The sensei (literally meaning one who has gone before) has the responsibility for guiding you through the training and development that he or she has been through. The sensei is more likely to recognize all the factors that make up a black belt. These factors include more than just the physical skills and techniques. They also include conduct, character, and internalization of the principles of Judo. Application of the Judo principles to life outside the dojo is one of the unifying commonalities that brings black belts together. As a black belt, you strive to apply all the principles you have learned in class to the rest of your life. For example, when you learn that you must be committed to a Judo throw and follow through to make it work, as a black belt you should become conscious of how these same principles will help you to achieve other goals off the mats.

Train hard, be humble, don't show off or complain, and do your best in everything in your life. This is what it means to be a black belt. Black belts are often ordinary people who try harder and don't give up. Black belt can be achieved in spite of any weaknesses you may have. I have promoted men and women who began training very late in life, people who were disabled or blind, and people who were very afraid of physical activity when they started. It is how you face and overcome your own personal difficulties that determines your character, an important component of a black belt.

On the other hand, to be overconfident, to show off your skill, to look down on others, and to show a lack of respect characterize the student who will have difficulty achieving black belt. This is not to say that black belts don't have faults, they are just the ones working on improving themselves. Striving for perfection as a whole person is a sign of the black belt. What they wear around their waist will always be more than simply a piece of merchandise bought for a few dollars in a martial arts supply store. The belt will represent their personal struggle to achieve excellence.

The first level of black belt in Japanese is called shodan. It literally means "first level" or "beginning step". Sho (first) is an ideograph that is comprised of two radicals meaning "cloth" and "knife". To make a piece of clothing, one first cuts out the pattern on the cloth. The pattern determines the style and look of the final product. If the pattern is out of proportion or in error, the clothes will look bad and not fit properly. In the same way, your initial training to reach black belt is very important because it determines how you will eventually turn out as a black belt. After years of training you have cut the pattern and learned the basic techniques. The promotion to black belt is a recognition of this hard work and a level of accomplishment that one can be proud of. On the other hand, shodan is really just the beginning, the base, for learning Judo or any martial art.

In many years of teaching, I have noticed that the students who are solely concerned with getting their promotion discourage easily, as soon as they realize it is harder than they expected. Students who come in just for practice, without concern for rank, always do well. They are not crushed by shallow or unrealistic goals.

There is a famous story about Yagyu Matajuro, who was a son of the famous Yagyu family of swordsmen in 17th century feudal Japan. He was kicked out of the house for lack of talent and potential, and sought out instruction of the swordmaster Tsukahara Bokuden, with the hope of achieving mastery of the sword and regaining his family position.

On their initial interview, Matajuro asked Tsukahara Bokuden, "How long will it take me to master the sword?" Bokuden replied, "Oh, about five years if you train very hard."

"If I train twice as hard, how long will it take?" inquired Matajuro. "In that case, ten years," retorted Bokuden.

Scottsdale Karate School - talks about keeping your cool

Nerve: 12 Ways to Be Afraid
(and Keep Your Cool)

Taylor Clark has written a very compelling and insightful book about anxiety, our amygdala (fear center in the brain), and, in general, what makes us freak out in his new book, "Nerve: Poise Under Pressure, Serenity Under Stress, and the Brave New Science of Fear and Cool." It was hard to choose which stuff to excerpt, but ultimately I think his "12 Ways to Be Afraid" at the end was the most helpful ... what to do with all the research we just learned.

"I've built up a short list of the most effective, proven methods that psychology and neuroscience have to offer," writes Clark. "Fear is a fact of life. All we can do is learn how to be afraid in the right way. So herewith, a dozen quick tips to get us started."

I've excerpted from and consolidated his 12 steps below.

1. Breathe.

By consciously controlling our breath, we can inform our parasympathetic nervous system that things are okay, lowering our heart rate and taking fear down a notch.

2. Put your feelings into words.

Talking or writing about an emotion like fear helps the brain to process it behind the scenes; it allows the mind to disambiguate (i.e. sort out) thoughts and feelings instead of just churning over them repeatedly.

3. Train, practice, and prepare.

Whether you want to make better decisions under stress, handle life-threatening situations with composure, or perform your best when pressure hits, training is the only reliable way to ensure success; through repetition and experience, you program yourself to do the right thing automatically.

4. Redirect your focus.

From nervous student test-takers to anxious athletes to jittery actors, the culprit in cases of meltdown under pressure isn't FEAR but misdirected focus: we turn our attention inward and grow preoccupied with worries about results, which undercuts our true abilities. Clutch athletes and cool-headed heroes concentrate on the present moment and on the task at hand, a habit we can all develop through practice.

5. Mindfully disengage from worries and anxious thoughts.

Evelyn Behar, the worry expert, suggests two paths for detaching from internal chirping. One is to take the mindfulness route: the more you learn to simply watch your worries and let them coast by without getting engaged with them, the more you see them and their predictable patterns as if from far above. "Or," Behar continued, "you can postpone worry. You write a worry down and agree that later on you can worry about it for thirty minutes, which frees you up to focus on the moment."

6. Expose yourself to your fears.

If you want to remain locked into a fear indefinitely, then by all means, avoid the situations that make you anxious. But if you want to give your amygdala a chance to get over a fear, you must expose yourself the things and ideas that scare you.

7. Learn to accept uncertainty.

Anxiety experts like Robert Leahy suggest taking a hint from the well-worn Serenity Prayer, which aspires for "the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

8. Reframe the situation.

"I like to say you can make an emotional molehill into an emotional mountain, which is what people do all the time," said the Columbia psychologist Kevin Ochsner, who studies how we reappraise situations to adapt our emotional responses. When anxious biases float in, Ochsner stresses the importance of recontextualizing: staying grounded in reason and reminding ourselves of the (doubtlessly more positive) reality of the situation.

9. Joke around.

By poking fun a life's occasional grimness, we neutralize its venom and lift ourselves above it....Humor is helpful because it lets us play around with concepts and points of view, so anything you can do to find the ridiculous, less serious side of a rough situation will lighten the mood.

10. Build faith in yourself.

Confidence transforms dangerous-seeming threats into challenges we can overcome, it gives us a sense of control over our fate, and it keeps us plugging away at problems until we find a solution instead of just giving up.

11. Keep your eyes on a guiding principle.

Dedication to a higher purpose--be it spiritual belief, altruism, or personal goals and principles--help keep us afloat and pointed in the right direction when everything appears scary or hopeless.

12. Open up to fear unconditionally.

There's nothing wrong with feeling anxious, ever, over anything at all. Fear and anxiety are part of who we are. Once we drop the pointless, wrongheaded routine about needing to get rid of them, we can carry fear and anxiety around with us through life like friendly companions.

Scottsdale Karate School encourages donations for Japan

Donations for Japan’s
Earthquake and Tsunami

Goshin Karate and Judo Academy is encouraging everyone to donate for the survivors of Japan’s recent earthquake and tsunami. There are several ways to contribute to the Japanese earthquake relief. Send $10 to the Salvation Army's efforts by texting “japan” or “quake” to 80888, or text “redcross" to 90999. Either will make a $10 donation. You can also donate online to both organizations.

Roger Boggs, Chief Instructor at the Martial Arts school said, “The moment I heard about this tragedy I knew I had to help out as our art comes from Japan. Plus, I have several friends there.”

“This is very important to my students and me so as an incentive and a thank you, everyone who donates any amount will receive a guest pass for a free "Two Week" introductory karate course.”

Goshin Karate & Judo Academy is located at 6245 E. Bell Road #120 in Scottsdale Arizona (across from La Casa De Cristo Lutheran Church). Drop off your proof of donation Monday through Friday from 4:00 to 7:00. You can also email a copy of your donation receipt to info@GoshinKarate.com  and you will receive a one week guest pass.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Japan. The fundraising drive will run from now through March 31st.

Anti-Bullying Summit - March 10th, 2011

President Obama showcased federal, state, local initiatives to address bullying, at a White House webcast on bullying prevention.

President Obama speaks at a conference on bullying prevention in the East Room of the White House in Washington, Thursday, March 10.

Partly it’s because he grew up being teased about his big ears, and partly it’s because he has two young daughters: For President Obama, the nation’s bullying problem is one he takes personally

He and First Lady Michelle Obama opened a conference on bullying prevention Thursday morning by calling on all adults to consider the role they can play in creating a safer climate for children.

The issue is even more personal for some conference attendees – parents and siblings of youths who have killed themselves in recent years in the wake of repeated bullying.

Sirdeaner Walker, for instance, became a national advocate for anti-bullying laws and education after her 11-year-old son, Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, committed suicide in 2009 after prolonged anti-gay bullying at school. Attention to his case, as well as the suicide last year of teenager Phoebe Prince, helped build momentum for a new comprehensive bullying prevention law in Massachusetts.

“No family should have to go through what these families have gone through,” President Obama said. With a third of all middle-schoolers and high-schoolers reporting that they have been bullied in a given school year, he said, “we’ve got to make sure our young people know that if they’re in trouble, there are caring adults who can help.... And this is a responsibility we all share – a responsibility we have to teach all children the Golden Rule: We should treat others the way we want to be treated.”

By taking on bullying in such a high-profile way, the conference “will be a huge step towards changing our current ‘vulture culture’ into one of respect and equality,” says Susan Lipkins, a psychologist who helps train educators on bullying prevention. Because the conference included a live chat on Facebook, she says, it’s “really hitting directly at the population most likely to bully and be bullied.”

Many young people want to stand up against bullying, but simply don’t know how, Ms. Lipkins adds.

On the new website StopBullying.gov, both children and adults can find a wide range of free resources to better understand bullying and how to respond.

Increasingly, state legislators are requiring educators to address bullying. Forty-five states have anti-bullying laws, but many need to be more comprehensive, according to the watchdog group Bully Police USA. The group gives New Jersey’s recently revised law and the 2010 Massachusetts law an A++ rating for meeting key criteria such as mandating anti-bullying programs, protecting people against reprisal for reporting bullying, and including a clause on cyberbullying.

Only 30 of the state laws specifically address cyberbullying, and many of those don’t outline what schools should do, said Justin Patchin, co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center, during the conference. About 1 in 5 teens has experienced cyberbullying ranging from minor things to death threats, but less than 15 percent tell adults, he says, partly because they don’t want to lose access to their cell phones or social media sites.

On the federal level, Sens. Mark Kirk (R) of Illinois and Bob Casey (D) of Pennsylvania this week reintroduced the Safe Schools Improvement Act, which would require comprehensive anti-bullying policies in schools, specifically addressing commonly targeted populations such as members of a minority race, religion, or sexual orientation.

A 2005 survey by the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network found that students were less likely to face serious harassment at schools with such comprehensive policies than at schools lacking those policies.

Another bill, the Student Non-Discrimination Act, is being introduced Thursday in the Senate and House by Sen. Al Franken (D) of Minnesota and Rep. Jared Polis (D) of Colorado. It would protect students from discrimination, including harassment “based on actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity” in public elementary and secondary schools.

One of the advocates for that bill is Wendy Walsh, whose son, Seth Walsh, killed himself last year at age 13 after being bullied for his perceived sexual orientation.

But laws on the books can’t do much if schoolteachers and other staff aren’t given guidance about how to respond when bullying is reported.

Knowing that schools are burdened with tight budgets and little time, the US Department of Education has been trying to provide some help on this front.

Through its Office for Civil Rights it has sent out letters of guidance to school districts and colleges about educators’ responsibility to protect students from harassment. It has also sent out a memo to chief state school officers outlining key components of effective anti-bullying laws and policies. And the Department will be creating a technical assistance center for schools, dedicated specifically to bullying prevention, officials announced today.

Eleven states have also received grants from the Education Department to measure school safety and put prevention efforts into place in the schools most in need. “This is the first time we’ve asked students directly what’s going on in their schools... and the states [receiving the grants] have to make the results public so parents can know how safe the school is,” says Kevin Jennings, assistant deputy secretary of the department’s Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools.

The kids willing to stand up against bullying need to be treated as heroes, several experts noted.

“We need to rewrite the culture... so it’s not ‘ratting.’ We need to reward reporting,” Lipkins says.

Martial Arts - Scottsdale - Introducing Roger

I seem to be on a Cartoon kick lately......

But....   I wanted to re-introduce....   my childhood hero.... Roger Ramjet

There is a fictitious guy I’d like to introduce you to. His name is Roger. He’s the guy who says, “Roger that” when there’s a problem. Roger doesn’t understand “no” or “impossible”. Roger is a can-do man. Roger wakes you up early in the morning. Roger says no to ego and fear. Roger gets the job done.

When it comes to business there are innumerable distractions, disappointments, especially personal ones. Roger will get you through. Roger is a decision you make to get there no matter what.

Roger says:

• Do it now.
• Don’t listen to the naysayers.
• Every day is a work day.
• You can do it.
• Now is the best time to work.
• Holidays are important too.

The proton pill that Roger Ramjet takes is the decision to adopt a Roger attitude today

Rango - Movie opens in Scottsdale

Rango – review

Johnny Depp is a domesticated chameleon who assumes the role of sheriff in a frontier town populated by desert creatures in this trippy animation western, full of spoofery and parody.

It's a brave family animation that incorporates trippy mysticism, existential self-reflection and the kind of freakish creatures that would never get past Disney's merchandising division, but this comedy-western cartoon digs its spurs into the mainstream formula. Johnny Depp creates a scene-stealing hero: a domesticated chameleon who assumes the role of sheriff in a frontier town populated by desert creatures. There's much to enjoy in the surreal dream sequences and western spoofery, with nods to everything from Sergio Leone to Blazing Saddles to Chinatown. The dry desert heat is almost palpable, the sun-bleached landscapes often beautiful and the characters uncannily expressive and lifelike. It's like Looney Tunes

Inspiring Quotes from Dr. Seuss

Dr Seuss Quotes

Get a taste of Dr Seuss quotes and begin to see how this American writer and cartoonist endeared himself to both children and adults.

Born as Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904 - 1991), Dr. Seuss was best-known for his classic children's books under his pen name. Among his most popular books includes "The Cat in the Hat", "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", "Green Eggs and Ham" and "One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish".

Go through his quote collection below and you'll experience his trademark of rhyming text which sings to you.

I read a few of his books as a kid but I guess I was too young then to comprehend the wonder of his rhyming text. But... his outlandish characters left a big impression even on my young mind then. Till today, even though I can't remember any of the story lines, I could recall his characters.

Reading his quotes now gives me a better appreciation of his wise and witty observations.

Enjoy these wonderful Dr Seuss quotes!

Dealing with "GRUMPY" kids

What to do when kids get grumpy

Grumpy children are really hard to handle, and it seems like, at least for me, that when a season changes, the grumpiness of my children seems to be magnified 10 times. Sleeping schedules change, it is dark early at night, and there are extracurricular activities late into the evening. The chance of sibling fights increases because the children are on top of each other while they are doing their homework or chores. Pretty soon the whole family can get grumpy!

However, you can work with your children to order their lives so they (and you) can deal with their grumpiness. May I suggest three different ways you may want to think about curing or at least relieving the challenges of grumpiness in your family.

-- First, children get grumpy if they don't get enough sleep. This often means you must alter your schedule accordingly. If they are going to stay up late the night before, they will need to either sleep in or take naps the next day. This is usually possible over the weekend.

Also, major activities take a lot of energy, so having them one day after the other, especially with very young children, can be taxing. A late activity one night and an early school schedule the next day just doesn't work well, either. So make every effort to get them enough sleep.

-- Second, teach children that weariness is part of life and that it is OK to stop, curl up and just lie down for a while after school, even if napping isn't likely to happen. Weariness is inevitable, especially during very stressful or long, drawn-out days. Lastly, help them gain skills to talk through their feelings and their emotions when they get grumpy. When emotions are running high and weariness is added, grumpiness is magnified.

-- Talk with your children about why and how grumpiness is manifest in people's lives. Maybe when you're with your children and you observe it in another person, you might wish to speak to your family members about it. This will help them understand what grumpiness is like and how they can perceive it in themselves and other people.

So help them get enough sleep, help them know how to handle their own weariness by taking a reprieve, and help them to communicate properly when grumpiness has set in. Good luck! Remember, your family will be a happier family all around when grumpiness is better understood!
