Karate Kids Eating Healthy

Eating Healthy On A Budget

If you have problems serving healthy foods because of the prices, you’ll find these tips to be just what you need to eat healthy on a budget.

1. Eliminate junk food
Doing your shopping on your own is the easiest way to shop, as children and sometimes spouses are usually the ones requesting junk food. Shopping alone will prevent this, and ensure that you only buy the foods you need.

2. Water or milk instead of soft drinks
You can still enjoy your favorite drinks at a sporting event or night out, although you should stick with the smallest size when shopping to save money and calories. Children and even adults need milk or milk products on a daily basis. Milk will also help you get strong and provides calcium for healthy bones and healthy teeth.

3. Buy fruits in quantity
When they are in season, buy fruits in quantity and freeze any extras. You can buy several pounds this way, and freeze extras to have them when the fruit goes out of season. Wash the fruit well, remove any spoiled pieces, dry thoroughly, then freeze in plastic zipper bags.

4. Meats and beans
Meats and beans are the best sources for protein. Lean meat is more expensive than meats with a lot of fat. Canned beans are a great deal as well, as they give you protein at a great price.

5. Beans as a substitute
You should use beans a substitute for meat on a frequent occasion. There are several varieties, so you can prepare them in a crock pot, so when you return home they are ready to consume. The USDA recommends eating beans at least 4 times per week. If you experience gas after eating beans you should try washing them, covering them with water, bringing the water to a boil, then draining it off and refilling the pot.

6. Buy food that are in season.... saving money in the process.

7. Peanut butter is great for those on a budget as it’s popular with almost everyone. You can use it for sandwiches instead of eating hot dogs. It does need to be refrigerated, although bigger jars can last you for weeks.

8. You should fill up with foods that have a high content of water. Watermelon, salads, and even sugar free gelatin are all great examples.

Eating healthy is always something you can’t go wrong with. You can eat healthy for just a few bucks, which makes it perfect for those on a budget. Now, you don’t need a lot of money to have the lifestyle and health you’ve always wanted.

Scottsdale Karate School - Practicing Praising

The Power in Praising People

One of the keys to success is to have successful relationships. We are not islands and we don't get to the top by ourselves. And one of the key ways to grow successful in our relationships is to be "life-giving" people to others. Every person we meet, we either give life to or take life from. You know what I mean. There are people who encourage you and when you are done being with them you feel built up. Then there are others who you feel torn down by. Successful people are people who have mastered the art of building others up.

One of the ways we build people up is to praise them. There is power in praising people! Something begins to happen in them, in you, and in your relationship when you praise someone. Remember a time when someone told you something about yourself in a praising manner? It was great, wasn't it? You probably liked that person more after they praised you, didn't you?

Now I am not talking about praising people for the sake of praising people. I am talking about honestly looking for and praising positive character traits and action of others around you. Don't lie to people. If they have done something wrong, correct it, but when they do something right, Praise it!

With that said, here are benefits of and ways to start praising people.

Benefits

Your relationship grows. Life is about relationships. Family relationships, friends, and co-workers. When we begin to praise people for their positive aspects, our relationships grow. It puts them, and us, on the fast track.

Your leadership and influence grows. Who is going to have greater leadership and influence capacity in the lives of their followers, the one who tears down or the one who builds up?

Stronger relationships and loyalty. When the person is appreciated and praised, they become fiercely loyal, because they know that you care for them, love them, and appreciate them. This will take you to success.

Happier, more fulfilled people. I truly believe it is our job to build others up and that they need it. It is a good thing, in and of itself to invest in the lives of others by praising and encouraging them. Even if we never get anything in return, it is the right thing to do to build up other people. Someone else will always come along to tear them down; the successful person will instill in them the power of praise!

Some ways to praise

Character traits. Is there someone you know who is joyful? Hard-working? Honest? Then let them know how much you appreciate that in them. You can do it with a word or a card, or a phone call. Say something like this, "You know Tom, I think it is great that you are such a hard-worker. It seems like you are always the first one here and the last one to leave. You really set a good example and I want you to know how much I appreciate that." Simple!

Action

Same idea as above. "Sue, I don't know if anybody else has told you this, but your work on the Johnson account was excellent. You have a wonderful ability to communicate the vision of the project and that helps all of the rest of us out in our roles and tasks. Thanks for that. It is greatly appreciated."

Other ways you can show praise and appreciation is with a card, a gift, or time off from work.

Make it your goal to praise at least five people a day. If you can, praise ten people a day. Or perhaps you can try to praise everyone you come in contact with. It will take work but it is possible. It just takes discipline and a little work.

Any way you cut it though, there is power in praising people. First for them, then for you!

Scottsdale Children deserve a healthy start

Children deserve a healthy start

Good nutrition is the foundation for a child’s success, whether that is academic performance and test scores, behavior, health, or school attendance and participation. And giving our children a healthy breakfast is an important part of our fight against childhood hunger.

That is why we need to start working with Scottsdale/Phoenix schools to give our children more ways to access breakfast - like offering “grab-n-go” boxes, delivering breakfast to the classroom, or serving breakfast after first period.

Share Our Strength's No Kid Hungry Strategy

These new breakfast options are just one of the tools we’re using to fight hunger in Arizona. Together, with our partners at Share Our Strength and the Partnership to End Childhood Hunger, Arizona should look at expanding to a Summer Meals Program like some other states.

We might want to consider an Afterschool Meals Program – as has been proposed in other 50 states. To take care of the Kids who may not otherwise have access to a nutritious dinner.

There are thousands of children that continue to go hungry in our state. And when a child goes hungry anywhere in Arizona, it impacts all of us. Together, we can work to end childhood hunger in North Scottsdale and Phoenix and ensure that our children have the healthy start they deserve.

Phoenix Karate kids Solving Problems

problem solving

Basic Problem Solving 101
A seven-step problem solving cycle

There are a variety of problem solving processes but each process consists of a series of steps, including identifying an issue, searching for options and putting a possible solution into action. It is useful to view problem solving as a cycle because, sometimes, a problem needs several attempts to solve it, or the problem changes.

Seven-step problem solving cycle

To solve a problem, take the steps, one at a time.

Step 1. Identify the problem

The first step you need to take is to identify and name the problem so that you can find an appropriate solution. Sometimes you might be unsure about what the problem is: you might just feel general anxiety or be confused about what is getting in the way of your goals. If it is a personal problem you can ask yourself, your friends or a counsellor, ‘What is the problem which is getting in the way of me achieving my goal’. If it is an academic issue you can ask yourself, ‘What is hindering me from completing this task’, and you can consult with your tutor, supervisor or a Learning Adviser to clarify the issue.

Step 2. Explore the problem

When you are clear about what the problem is you need to think about it in different ways. You can ask yourself questions such as:

• ‘How is this problem affecting me?’

• ‘How is it affecting others?’

• ‘Who else experiences this problem?’

• ‘What do they do about it?’

Seeing the problem in different ways is likely to help you find an effective solution.

Step 3. Set goals

Once you have thought about the problem from different angles you can identify your goals. What is it that you want to achieve? Sometimes you might get so frustrated by a problem that you forget to think about what you want. For example, you might become ill, struggle to complete a number of assignments on time and feel so unmotivated that you let due dates pass. It is important at this time to consider the question, ‘What is my immediate goal?’ Do you want to:

• improve your health?

• increase your time management skills?

• complete the assignments to the best of your ability?

• finish the assignments as soon as possible?

If you decide your goal is to improve your health, that will lead to solutions which are different from those linked to the goal of completing your assignments as soon as possible. One goal may lead you to a doctor and/or to take leave of absence from university; the other goal may lead you to apply for extensions for your assignments. So working out your goals is a vital part of the problem solving process.

Step 4. Look at Alternatives

When you have decided what your goal is you need to look for possible solutions. The more possible solutions you find the more likely it is that you will be able to discover an effective solution. You can brain-storm for ideas. The purpose of brain-storming is to collect together a long list of possibilities. It does not matter whether the ideas are useful or practical or manageable: just write down the ideas as they come into your head. Some of the best solutions arise from creative thinking during brain-storming. You can also seek ideas about possible solutions from friends, family, a partner, a counsellor, a lecturer, books or the internet. The aim is to collect as many alternative solutions as possible.

Step 5. Select a possible solution

From the list of possible solutions you can sort out which are most relevant to your situation and which are realistic and manageable. You can do this by predicting outcomes for possible solutions and also checking with other people what they think outcomes might be. For example, if a possible solution is withdrawing from your current activity and join Goshin Karate and Judo Academy in Scottsdale Arizona and it seems realistic and manageable to you. When you have explored the consequences, you can use this information to identify the solution which is most relevant to you and is likely to have the best outcomes for your situation.

Step 6. Implement a possible solution

Once you have selected a possible solution you are ready to put it into action. You will need to have energy and motivation to do this because implementing the solution may take some time and effort. (If the solution had been easy to find and do, you would have probably already done it.) You can prepare yourself to implement the solution by planning when and how you will do it, whether you talk with others about it, and what rewards you will give yourself when you have done it.

Step 7. Evaluate

Just because you have worked your way through the problem solving process it does not mean that, by implementing the possible solution, you automatically solve your problem. So evaluating the effectiveness of your solution is very important. You can ask yourself (and others) :

• ‘How effective was that solution?’

• ‘Did it achieve what I wanted?’

• What consequences did it have on my situation?’

If the solution was successful in helping you solve your problem and reach your goal, then you know that you have effectively solved your problem. If you feel dissatisfied with the result, then you can begin the steps again. Viewing problem solving as a cycle may help you recognise that problem solving is a way of searching for a solution which will lead to different possible solutions, which you can evaluate. If you have solved the problem you have found an effective solution. If you judge the problem has not been solved you can look for, and try, alternative possibilities by beginning the problem solving cycle again.

When to use problem solving

You can problem solve anytime you have a problem to solve or a goal to achieve. You can use the problem solving model to look for solutions to issues connected with your study, relationships, work or sport. You can take the problem solving steps by yourself, with a friend, or in a group. Problem solving with others is often very effective because you have access to a wide variety of viewpoints and potential solutions. The problem solving model is a useful resource for you to utilise in your personal, academic and professional lives.

Conclusion

Problem solving is a skill and a process which you can learn. You can implement the process to help you solve a problem by following the seven steps outlined in this Learning Guide. Once you have learned the steps and begun to implement the process, problem solving will be a new skill which you have acquired and can be used at university, home and in the workplace.

Karate Kids in Scottsdale - Dealing with Being Afraid

Stop Kids Fear of Ghost Monsters and the DarkBeing Afraid

Have you ever been afraid? Everyone gets scared sometimes. Maybe thunder and lightning make your heart beat faster. Or maybe your mouth goes dry when your teacher announces a pop quiz, or your palms sweat when it's your turn to give your report in front of the class. Perhaps you get butterflies in your stomach when you see the bully who picks on you.

Everyday Worries

We all have fears from time to time. That's true no matter how big we are or brave we can be. Fear can even be good for you sometimes and even help you stay healthy. Fear of getting too close to a campfire may save you from a bad burn. And fear of getting a bad grade on a test might make you study more.

Being a bit on edge also can sharpen your senses and help you perform better in a recital or during a track meet. Some people even enjoy being a little scared. That's why they like to watch scary movies or go on roller-coaster rides.

What Happens When you’re Scared?

Have you ever wondered why being scared makes your heart beat faster and makes you breathe quicker? The body's reaction to fear is called the "fight or flight" response. And people have had it since the beginning of time.

Here's how it works. Imagine you're a caveman or cavewoman living 100,000 years ago — and you come face to face with a hungry saber-toothed tiger. You have two choices: 1) Run for it (that's flight), or 2) pick up your club and battle the tiger (that's fight). A final choice (be eaten) doesn't seem like such a good one!

Today, you can apply fight or flight to that bully who confronts you and won't listen to reason. You have two choices: 1) Turn and walk away (flight), or 2) fight, even though you know fighting won't solve the problem.

To prepare for fight or flight, you body does a number of things automatically so it's ready for quick action or a quick escape. Your heart rate increases to pump more blood to your muscles and brain. Your lungs take in air faster to supply your body with oxygen. The pupils in your eyes get larger to see better. And your digestive and urinary systems slow down for the moment so you can concentrate on more important things.

What Is Anxiety?

Usually, our bodies go into fight or flight only when there is something to fear. However, sometimes this occurs when there doesn't seem to be anything to be frightened about. When you feel scared but there doesn't seem to be a clear reason, that's called anxiety (say: ang-zye-uh-tee).

Other feelings might come along with anxiety — like a feeling of tightness in your chest, a bellyache, dizziness, or a sense that something horrible is going to happen. These feelings can be very frightening. Sometimes anxiety can interfere with things you need to do, like learning and sleeping.

For some kids, feelings of anxiety or worry can happen anytime. For others, they might occur only at certain times, like when they're leaving their home or family to go somewhere. In some people, this feeling of anxiety occurs almost all the time and gets in the way of doing what they want to do.

Some kids may have a phobia (say: foe-bee-uh), which is an intense fear of something specific, such as being up high, getting dirty, the number 13, or spiders.

Why Do People Have Anxiety?

Anxiety can run in families. Or a person might develop anxiety after something terrible happens, like a car crash. Sometimes certain medical illnesses can cause feelings of anxiety. So can abusing alcohol or other drugs, like cocaine.

Another part of the explanation has to do with the different chemicals in the nerve cells of the brain. How the chemicals in our brain's nerve cells are balanced can affect how we feel and act. One of these chemicals is serotonin (say: sir-uh-toe-nun). Serotonin is one of the brain chemicals that helps send information from one brain nerve cell to another. But for some people with anxiety, this brain chemical system doesn't always seem to work the way it should.

Also, some scientists think that a special area in the brain controls the fight or flight response. With anxiety, it's like having the fight or flight response stuck in the ON position — even when there is no real danger. That makes it hard to focus on everyday things.

Dealing with Anxiety

Your parents might take you to a doctor, who can help find out if a medical problem is making you feel anxious, or to a therapist, who can help find a way to lessen the anxiety through talking, activities, Anxiety can be treated successfully. Tell your mom or dad if find yourself more scared than you feel you should be or if your anxiety becomes strong and is getting in the way of what you want or need to dorelaxation exercises, or medication (or a combination of these things).

Of course, if you do come face to face with a hungry saber-toothed tiger, there's just one thing you should do . . . RUN!

Karate Class - Mentors and Friends

Show Me Your Friends and
I’ll Show You Your Future

One thing that we forget to mention about our little Karate school in north Scottsdale Arizona are the friendships that our made here. The friendships that our students create here at Goshin Karate and Judo Academy with one another are amazing. And don’t forget the friendships with the karate instructors. I personally have witnessed the area of friendships of my karate students and even the parents as they mingle after class and at our potlucks and picnics. I guess that what make us different. My goal is to build healthy friendships by creating a Martial Arts family with an “It takes a village to raise a family mind set.”

People connect to people. We all understand that everyone has a different sense of humor, a different sense of style and are as unique as the types of music we listen to and books we read. But among all the unique kinds of Karate Kids that enter our dojo, both your average kids and the future Goshin Action Heroes they all need to find someone they can connect to. If we can connect two students that are learning about Goals, Perseverance, Loyalty, Respect, Courtesy, Self Control, Honor, Integrity, and having a Positive “YES I CAN” Attitude just like all the other karate students in class, immediately that person who started on the outside feels as if he or she has a friend, that can share the same values and know what it means to “Be a Good Person.”

As your kids grow older, we continue to help them evaluate the challenge they may face in their lives as a mentor and a role model. Before I say, “Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future,” if I’m addressing friendships as the title of my message, I ask YOU to look at your five closest friends and write them down on a piece of paper. Then take a minute to realize that those five individuals paint an extremely accurate picture of what lies ahead for you. ---- Take a minute… close your eyes….. And picture…. the lives, attitudes, and character of those five friends. AND hear me say very clearly, “Welcome to your future…”I stands firm on the issue of those we call friends, the people who walk alongside us. And remember “He who walks with wise men, will be wise”
