Kung Fu Panda and Inner Peace

Kung Fu Panda cartoon picture 4

Yesterday I went to the Kung Fu Panda Movie with my students and parents of Goshin Karate and Judo Academy -- Not Bad... A good story... What caught my attention was how the movie presented some of Tao's most important teachings:

- Find Inner Peace.
- Let go and let it flow

To find Inner Peace, one can meditate on a beautiful mountain with waterfalls and caves (being one with nature)... or on your couch in front of the television - We can "Find Inner Peace" anywhere
AND.... that we really learn to let go and let if flow... like water which will forever flow downstream and into the sea. How many of us can do that?

I am still in the search for my Inner Peace... are you?

Seven Steps to Inner Peace

These are some suggestions for bringing more peace into your mind.

1. Choose carefully where we spend time.

If you are a news addict and spend an hour reading newspapers everyday, our mind will be agitated by the relentless negativity we see in the world. It is true, that we can try to detach from this negativity. But, in practice, we will make our progress easier if we don’t spend several hours ruminating over the problems of the world. If you have a spare 15 minutes, don’t just automatically switch on the TV or surf the internet. Take the opportunity to be still or at least do something positive. The problem is the mind feels insecure unless it has something to occupy it. However, when we really can attain a clear mind we discover it creates a genuine sense of happiness and inner peace.

2. Control of Thoughts.

It is our thoughts that determine our state of mind. If we constantly cherish negative and destructive thoughts, inner peace will always remain a far cry. At all costs, we need to avoid pursuing trains of negative thoughts. This requires practice. – We cannot attain mastery of our thoughts over night. But, at the same time we always have to remember that we are able to decide which thoughts to follow and which to reject. Never feel you are a helpless victim to your thoughts.

“If you have inner peace,
nobody can force you to be a slave to the outer reality.”
3. Simplify Your Life

Modern life, places great demands on our time. We can feel that we never have enough time to fulfill all our tasks. However, we should seek to minimize these outer demands. Take time to simplify your life; there are many things that we can do without, quite often we add unnecessary responsibilities to our schedule. Do the most significant tasks, one at a time, and enjoy doing them. To experience inner peace, it is essential to avoid cluttering our life with unnecessary activities and worries.

4. Spend time to cultivate inner peace.

Every day we spend 8 hours a day to earn money; can we not find time to spend 15 minutes to cultivate inner peace? No matter how much money we earn, it cannot bring us inner peace, but, if we spend 15 minutes on meditation and relaxation techniques inner peace can become a possibility. Meditation does not just mean sitting still for 30 minutes; in meditation we seek to experience a state of consciousness which is flooded with inner peace. To experience this inner peace we cannot allow any thought to enter into our mind. True inner peace occurs when we can transcend the world of thoughts.

You cannot buy peace; you must know how to manufacture it within, in the stillness of your daily practices in meditation.

5. Be immune to Flattery and Criticism

If we depend on the opinions and praise of other people, we can never have inner peace. Criticism and flattery are two sides of the same coin. They are both the judgments of others. However, we should not allow ourselves to be affected by either. When we do, we feed the ego. We should learn to have confidence in ourselves. This does not mean we will love ourselves in an egotistical way, it means we value our real self and have belief in the good qualities that are part of everyone.

6. Be Active selflessly

Inner peace does not mean that we have to live a life of a hermit. Inner peace can be felt amidst dynamic activity. But, this action should be done with selfless motives. When we serve others we forget our sense of self, and it is when we forget our limited self that we can have inner peace.

7. Avoid Criticizing Others

If we want inner peace, we should feel that our inner peace depends on the well being of others. If we are indifferent to the feelings of others, then it is impossible to have inner peace for ourselves. What we give out comes back. If you offer a peaceful attitude to others this is what we will see return.

Self Esteem and your Karate Kid

Self Esteem In Kids
What is self esteem in kids? What do low and healthy self esteem look like? How do we build healthy self esteem? I offer some answers here.

What Is Self Esteem?

Self esteem is all about what kids believe about themselves. These beliefs are formed during childhood as the child interacts with others and interprets their behaviorand treatment of him as an assessment of his value as a person. The actions of adults are more influential to the child's development of self belief, and his parents are the most important of all.

What Does Low Self Esteem Look Like?

Quiet

Not mixing with other children

Does not approach adults

Clingy

Impatient

Rubbishing his own work

Avoiding new challenges

Blaming others for failure

Easily frustrated

What Does Healthy Self Esteem Look Like?

Welcomes new challenges

Mixes well with others

Approaches adults confidently

Patient

Values own work/achievements

Takes responsibility for unsuccessful endeavors

Tolerates frustration

Confident and open communication in group situations

Welcomes new challenges

Why Is Healthy Self Esteem Important?

Healthy self esteem in children is important because it is the foundation on which their whole life is built. If it is a bit shaky, their life will not be a strong building! A healthy self esteem means that a child will be a confident learner, will build relationships easily, will care for themselves and their bodies and will go for their goals and dreams when they reach adulthood. These are the cornerstones of a successful and happy life.

Building Self Esteem in Kids

"They may forget what you said, but they will never forget how you made them feel." Carl W Buechner

We as parents have a pivotal role in building self esteem in children; We need to teach our children to love and value themselves. The first consideration is that we need to set a good example in our own self esteem. Do we care for and value ourselves? At the end of the day, your child will take more credence from your behavior than your words. Simply put, children need to be shown how to feel about themselves by how we as parents feel about them; and this is through our behavior towards them. If we show love, they will love themselves; if we value them, they will value themselves etc.

Self Esteem Building Tips

Provide opportunities for your child to enjoy simple pleasures.

Acknowledge your child for his personal qualities

Teach your child to treat themselves as they would like to be treated.

Teach your child about choices, consequences and personal responsibility.

Notice and praise wanted behavior using descriptive praise: "It was great how you comforted Sam when he hurt himself".

Help your child to play to their strengths.

Give your child the gift of quality time, sharing their fun.

Empower your child by involving them in the setting of house rules.

At bedtime encourage your child to think of a few things that he can feel happy about.

Teach your child that they don't have to put up with anyone being mean to them.

Teach your child to compare himself to how he used to be, to see how far he's come, instead of comparing himself to others.

There are so many ways to build self esteem in kids, I wish you joy on your journey to a happy family life :-)

See you in class.....

Karate Lessons - Life Lessons

Sticking Your Neck Out

One of the lessons giraffes teach us about life is that you have to stick you neck out.
Isn’t that how they reach such high and difficult places?
For such large creatures, they are so gentle.
They take extraordinary care of each other too.

In life, there are times we have to stick our necks out and take a risk.
Sometimes it is to help a friend.
Sometimes it is to achieve something important.
Sometimes it is pure faith.

In the end, all we have is our belief, faith and trust.
It is based on our deepest feelings and courage in listening to our heart and our truth.
Today, a good friend helped and supported me based on his faith and trust in me.
He wants to see me succeed and took a risk by sticking his neck out for me.
I am deeply grateful and know that good things, happen to good people....
How can you encourage the people in our life?
How can you inspire them to go forward and create their vision in the world?
What can you do to make a difference?
Remember, even the smallest, kindest act can be the most powerful.

Our lives are better when we make someone else feel better or help them to have a better life.
Acknowledge, recognize and appreciate the people in your life.
People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
People are the greatest resource in the world.

Share a smile, a kind word, open the door for someone, make someone laugh.
Be a smile millionaire!

Random Acts of Kindness: Operation Beautiful

You know me.....  I love doing random acts of kindness, especially the kind that make people feel better about themselves! Operation Beautiful's mission is "to end negative self-talk or 'Fat Talk.'" and to help readers realize how truly toxic negative self-talk is — it hurts you emotionally, mentality, and physically."

To participate in Operation Beautiful, all you have to do is write a positive note such as "You Are Beautiful!" or "You're wonderful, don't change a thing!" on a post it note pad and leave these notes anywhere you think women or young girl will see them......  Public restrooms, gyms, grocery stores, and even fashion magazines are great places to start. If you email a picture of your note to operationbeautiful@gmail.com  they'll put it up on their website!

Have a wonderful Wednesday, May the 4th...   Be with you...... and remember: You're Beautiful! :)

And Oh Ya....   GOSHIN GIRLS ROCK......
