What the 4th of July Mean to me!

What the 4th of July mean to me!

For one who was born and grew up in the small towns of the Midwest, there is a special kind of nostalgia about the Fourth of July.

I remember it as a day almost as long-anticipated as Christmas. This was helped along by the appearance in store windows of all kinds of fireworks and colorful posters advertising them with vivid pictures.

No later than the third of July – sometimes earlier – Dad would bring home what he felt he could afford to see go up in smoke and flame. We'd count and recount the number of firecrackers, display pieces and other things and go to bed determined to be up with the sun so as to offer the first, thunderous notice of the Fourth of July.

I'm afraid we didn't give too much thought to the meaning of the day. And, yes, there were tragic accidents to mar it, resulting from careless handling of the fireworks. I'm sure we're better off today with fireworks largely handled by professionals. Yet there was a thrill never to be forgotten in seeing a tin can blown 30 feet in the air by a giant "cracker" – giant meaning it was about 4 inches long. But enough of nostalgia.

Somewhere in our growing up we began to be aware of the meaning of days and with that awareness came the birth of patriotism. July Fourth is the birthday of our nation. I believed as a boy, and believe even more today, that it is the birthday of the greatest nation on earth.

Ronald Reagan

Editor's note: When he was president, Ronald Reagan wrote the following piece for Independence Day in 1981. Aide Michael Deaver later wrote: "This 4th of July message is the President's own words and written initially in his own hand."

Freedom's just another word for nothing' left to lose… Nothin' ain't worth nothin' but it's free.

In celebration of our independence it is nice to be able to share some inspiring quotes to help to remember and rekindle our patriotism. So, here are some Fourth of July quotes to share with those whom are important to you.

“Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.” – BenjaminFranklin

“The greatest lesson we can learn from the past is that freedom is at the core of every successful nation” – Anonymous

“Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, for the people” – Abraham Lincoln
Liberty is the right to choose. Freedom is the result of the right choice.” - Anon

“It is easy to take liberty for granted, when you have never had it taken from you.” – Anon

Freedom's just another word for nothing' left to lose… Nothin' ain't worth nothin' but it's free. Kris Kristofferson

Black Belt Island

Black Belt Island
A story of Perseverance and Survival
By: Roger Boggs
June 28, 2011

The story of Black Belt Island goes something like this…. The old sensei (A karate school owner back in the 70’s) was required to go back to his homeland to do a presentation of his Martial Arts ability before they would promote him to his next rank.  He needed to go from one side of the Island to the other and if he made it he would be promoted.  There were other students there to stop him.  If they stopped him they would get promoted…..

The premise of the movie or the reality TV show is something like this….

A martial arts student has been training his whole life earning numerous black belts and has progressed through the ranks on a consistent basis.  His sensei is getting older and knows the end is near, originally born in the city of Shuri in Okinawa; He has made amends with his family back in Okinawa and wants to take his prized student back to the Island to prove his knowledge of the arts and re-introduce an old family tradition.

The movie could start on the plane ride or a boat ride with flash back scenes of both the young student and some of his kick boxing tournament wins and the old sensei learning wisdom and techniques of his youth.

The twist to the story is….

The young student dressed in his graduation bests is asked to take final journey to Kudaka the Island of the Gods…  Black Belt Island” where he is to walk the path of his fathers mentors, to the temple for his promotion ceremony.

As he walks... he is approached by other karate students who are there to test his strength, ability and knowledge…

At this point in the movie there are 4-5 fight scenes of black belts trying to earn their next belt rank…

The young student finally makes it to the temple where he his awarded his belt and introduced to the other students and told of the story and the traditions of Black Belt Island….

BlackBeltIsland.com - coming soon....

I welcome your thoughts and comments

The True Spirit of Karate

"True Spirit Martial Arts" comes from "Shoshin", the meanings of the word is "True Heart" or "Beginners Mind". Shoshin is a term used in Zen to describe the state of mind that a child goes into when lost in the wonderment of exploring something new totally entranced.

Code of Hohan Soken

1. Always act in a courteous manner.

2. During training, concentrate to the limit of your mental endurance. Give your all, mentally and physically, as training without concentration prevents advancement.

3. The physical, mental and spiritual training of the student should be combined as one. The heart, mind and body should be in unison at all times.

4. Heed the advice of your teacher and of more advanced students of your school and other schools; listen to them and never forget their advice.

5. Listening and watching are key points to advancement.

6. In order to advance, one must strive to obtain the true spirit of karate.

7. Training is on a continuous basis, and one learns a little at a time. Do not take breaks in training as it will result in a step backwards.

8. Always strive for advancement and when advanced, one must not brag or boast.

9. Self-praise and over-confidence is a sickness that corrupts training.

10. Refrain from over-eating, drinking and smoking, for these bad habits hinder the effectiveness of your training.

11. Karate training has no limits. Step by step, study by study, and one day in the future you will undoubtedly enter the Temple of Shaolin.

Sun Safety

Sun Safety: Do you know these simple steps to protect your family from the dangers of the sun?

Going out in the sun is fun but we have to be careful about the risks involved. Melanoma, a serious skin cancer, can be triggered by spending too much time in the sun without the proper protection.

Sadly more than one million people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year.

You can help protect your family from the dangers of skin cancer by taking a few preventative steps. By ensuring that each person in your family puts on sunscreen before heading out the door you are taking the first step to reduce the chance of getting this disease.

Here are some precautions to take for your family when going outside:

§                       The worst hours for going out in the sun are from 10 AM to 4 PM. It’s best to avoid going out in the sun during this time frame because the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) strength is at its peak. If for some reason you have to be out in the sun at these hours use the maximum amount of protection that you can.

A sunblock with an SPF rating of 25 to 50 is the ideal during these hours. Sunblocks are even stronger than sunscreen. Non-protected exposure during these hours would increase your family’s risk of cancer tremendously.

§                       When do we put on the sunscreen? Rub it on half an hour before exposure to the sun. Some people only apply it after going outside. This is a mistake since it takes time for your skin to absorb the sunscreen.

§                       A common mistake that we make is forgetting certain spots when putting on the sunscreen. So every part of the skin that is exposed should have sunscreen. Ears, feet, behind the legs are places that we tend to forget.

§                       Keep reapplying it every 2 hours. Especially if you go into the water. Even if your sunscreen is water resistant you still need to reapply every 2 hours.

§                       Clothing helps to block sun rays so if possible, wear a light-weight, long-sleeved shirt, sunglasses, and a wide-brim hat to help protect your skin.

§                       Remain in the shade as much as possible. When your kids are playing in the sand, have them remain under a large umbrella for more protection.

Happy Father's Day....

Yesterday was Father's Day and it has been 5 years since my father pasted away (... He left me on Father's Day June 19th 2007)

I came across this poem I would like to share... It goes like this...

If I had my child to raise all over again, I’d build self-esteem first, and the house later.

I’d finger-paint more, and point the finger less.

I would do less correcting and more connecting.

I’d take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.

I’d take more hikes and fly more kites.

I’d stop playing serious, and seriously play.

I would run through more fields and gaze at more stars.

I’d do more hugging and less tugging.“

- Diane Loomans

Until next time... Be A Happy Parent!

Pretending and Lying?

What’s the difference between pretending and lying?

Jodi Moore’s When a Dragon Moves In is a whimsical summer sizzler about the antics of a dragon who moves into the sandcastle of a lucky little lad. While his family busily goes about their beach business, the boy and his dragon have all sorts of adventuresome fun roaming around and roasting marshmallows, busting bullies and braving the waves. Despite his insistence on the dragon’s existence, this creative, clever kid cannot convince his family that the dragon is real.

And when mischief starts to happen, the boy decides to send his dragon packing “until he learns some manners.” That’s my favorite part because it’s the perfect segue into a character chat with my students. What should a dragon’s manners look like, sound like, feel like at the beach? At home? At school? In the community? Who will teach him those manners? How will the boy know that the dragon has learned his new skill set? Then will the dragon be back?

The eye-poppingly expressive illustrations by Howard McWilliam bring the text to life in such a magical way that I actually wanted to believe! You can also use this gem as a springboard for a discussion about real versus pretend. Find out if your audience thinks that the dragon really exists. Why or why not? If they ascertain that the dragon is imaginary, then is the little boy being dishonest? What, if anything, is the difference between pretending and lying?

After reading this dragon tale, ask your children to share their favorite sun and sand adventures out loud using as many sparkle words as they can. Then, fire up their imaginations by encouraging them to mesh fantasy with fact as they script a summertime story of their own. Encourage families to spend the day together at their favorite beach so that they can draw from all five of their senses.

Oh, and don’t forget the sunscreen! Happy summertime!

Women's Self Defense, Scottsdale - North Phoenix - Classes in June and July

FIGHT LIKE A GIRL

I fight like a girl who refuses to be a victim.
I fight like a girl who's tired of being ignored and humored and beaten and raped.
I fight like a girls who's sick of not being taken seriously.
I fight like a girl who's been pushed too far.
I fight like a girl who offers and demands respect.
I fight like a girl who has a lifetime of anger and strength and pride pent up in her girly body.
I fight like a girl who doesn't believe in fear and submission.
I fight like a girl who knows that this body and this mind are mine.
I fight like a girl who knows that you only have as much power as I grant you.
I fight like a girl who will never allow you to take more than I offer.
I fight like a girl who fights back.
So next time you think you can distract yourself from your insecurities by victimizing a girl, think again.
She may be me and I FIGHT LIKE A GIRL.
