Never Pass up an Opportunity to improve your life

Never Pass up an Opportunity

51 Opportunities for Improving Your Life

My New Book "Never Pass Up an Opportunity - 51 Opportunities For Improving Your Life"  .. Just arrived today Authored by Larry Czerwonka… Pretty easy read... Some good nuggets of wisdom....  You can pick up your copy here at  -- https://www.createspace.com/3772729

This book is filled with opportunities and reminders to look for them daily...  My favorite one was #14 Never pass up up an opportunity to be some's rainbow when they are feeling down.

"When someone is feeling down, when the storm clouds surrounding them you have the opportunity to be a rainbow, to remind them that all storms pass... You do this by being an arms that hug or a shoulder to lean on or an ear that listens....

We all know that opportunities are always there waiting for us to notice them but somehow in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives we forget to look and we miss them. This book points out 51 opportunities and encourages you to seek them out.

Sending some love and positive energy out your way.

Assertiveness in Dealing with Negative People

I have been dealing with some negative people lately… They’re like a human black hole  sucking the life out of me….  I’ve learned you can’t always save the world…. But you can make the world a better place by working on yourself–by becoming self-aware… tapping into your compassion, and protecting your positive space.

Positive and negative are directions we get to choose…. I prefer positive….

I thought this article was worth sharing....

Assertiveness will also help you deal with the people who constantly put you down.

Instead of dealing with a problem and coming up with a resolution, they opt to insult and hurt your feelings.

Jules Feiffer calls these situations as “little murders” as these are intended to insult, humiliate or embarrass others. These people attack your self-confidence and your self-esteem. In the process, they “murder” what you have worked on so hard. Most of us just put up with these humiliating put-downs, but that only encourages them. We learned earlier that we teach people how to treat us, so we need to teach them that these “little murders” are painful, humiliating, and need to be stopped. C. H. Spurgeon said, “Insults are like bad coins; we cannot help their being offered us, but we need not take them.”

Sometimes the only way to avoid these put-downs is to avoid those delivering them. Remove yourself from their presence. Assert yourself and tell them it is an unacceptable behavior, then leave. The barbs only work if you react and show them how upset you are.

Speak your mind, then leave. It leaves them with nothing; you have taken the wind from their sails. Eventually, they will learn that you cannot be drawn into their little insults any longer and they will lose interest in you.
So, you have learned how to:

• Grow more assertive, not aggressive.
• Adjust your behavior to get what you really, really want.
• Protect yourself and your rights.
• Say ‘no’ and not feel guilty afterwards; you can cure this disease to please.
• Be respected for your actions and decisions.
• Bring up assertive children and teach them to be strong.
• Teach people how to treat you.

What is left for you is to practice, practice, practice. Build up your self-confidence and self-esteem.

Use your mistakes to your advantage. They will teach you wisdom. “Good judgment comes from experience, and often experience comes from bad judgment,” said Rita Mae Brown.

Put all the knowledge and wisdom you have gained into your everyday life and see what happens. Still unconvinced of the benefits of asserting yourself? Ask yourself, “What’s the worst thing that could happen to me if I learn to be assertive?” Now ask yourself, “What’s the best thing that could happen to me if I learn to be assertive?”

Imagine yourself in the position of assertiveness. You have learned to stand up for yourself and people are no longer taking advantage of your good nature and willingness to help.

You have gained a brand new position of authority at work doing only your own work. Your spouse has a newfound respect for you. Even your kids are more respectful, since you taught them how to treat you. You are not being mean to anyone, just firm about how you intend to be treated from now on. Elbert Hubbard said, “To know when to be generous and when to be firm -- that is wisdom.”

Remember, being assertive is about standing up for yourself and your rights, but without stomping on the other person’s feelings and rights.
Your attitude, behavior, beliefs, and values are now in line with who you really are: an assertive, no-nonsense, action-oriented, take-charge kind of person!

Kids showing respect in Scottsdale

Respect…

My definition is…
Treating people the way that they want to be treated!

Respect… A feeling of admiration that you have for someone because of their personal qualities... their achievements... or their status... and that you show by treating them in a polite and kind way...

"Respect means care, love, emotions, feeling and everything that a person feel towards others for their betterment, convenience, comfort, pleasure, happiness... etc." -- Everything in our life is incomplete without respect....The cycle of respect clearly explains it.

It is very important for us to know that respect can not be generated by any force till our heart allows it…  Let see the axis of LOVE AND RESPECT... it clearly explains the value of respect and love in any aspect of life.

See, it is a natural attribute of any person and can not be forced by any means... it comes from us loving one another

The Lorax... Opens in Scottsdale

This looks like a good movie.......

The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss is a light-hearted but cautionary tale with a critically important message. If we do not collectively take responsibility for the stewardship of the environment, then our own world will soon be like the one that the Lorax left behind. Left to the devices of greed-based business interests, the resources of our world are being consumed at an abominable rate. And soon, they will all be gone. So while the Once-ler did eventually see the error of his greedy ways, it was already close to too late for his world.
2080.jpg
One underlying message contained within the Lorax that is a good source of philosophical discussion is the idea of the interconnectedness of the things that live in an ecosystem. The ecosystem within the story completely falls apart when just one thing is taken away. As more and more of the Truffula trees get cut down, the area becomes less and less capable of supporting the multitude of other species all relying on the trees, and each other. So by removing the trees, things go completely out of balance. From a philosophical perspective, interesting questions may raised about what it means for things to be interdependent like they are in an ecosystem. Viewed from one perspective, the different species in an ecosystem are like parts of a delicate, but efficiently functioning whole. But what is this thing called "an ecosystem" that other things are parts of? What is its nature as a sort of entity in itself? If one views the ecosystem as an independent entity, this raises all sorts of ethical question about what our social responsibilities are to our own ecosystem, and to the earth as one big interconnected ecosystem.
Answers to many of the questions about our social responsibility to the ecosystem seem currently to be driven by the notion ofsustainability. In the Lorax it is not so much that the Once-ler has cut down a tree that upsets the Lorax, this just draws his attention. What initially upsets him is his discovery of the greedy intentions that the Once-ler has for the Fluff, and the realization that this greed would lead to disaster for his home. The idea of sustainability can be connected to the story when one raises the question of whether the Once-ler could have done things to keep the area healthy and able to continue flourishing. For example, had the Once-ler thought it through more carefully he would have realized that if he always replaced the trees that he took to harvest, there would always be enough trees both for him, and for the creatures dependent upon the tress for their survival. Again, important ethical questions can be raised here about what the Once-er's responsibility to his surrounding ecosystem was, and whether there may have been a sustainable way to co-exist with all of the other parts of the ecosystem, without disrupting the balance, and hence its ability to function.
Sending some love and positive energy out your way.

Just a drop of water....

Water has many forms... it penetrates and is subtle... A shiny river flows... but when it overflows it shakes the mountains reducing them to powder!
The water can become overwhelmingly powerful... It is one of those times where the weak takes over the strong... It goes its direction without ever stopping and is persistent...

As water should always express its authentic nature... through the Martial Arts - Karate and Judo… we have to continuously express our most authentic inclinations... But how can we conquer the needed perseverance?
Starting with a little bit... just a drop...

Sending some positive energy out your way.

Change your Words - Change your World

Change your Words…  Change your World…

People underestimate the power of their words, to do good or to do ill. Talk certainly isn't cheap, our words are the seeds we plant, and we need to always be mindful of what it is we're planting.

A blind beggar sat on the steps of a building with a sign saying “I’m blind, please help me”. Many people walked by, but only a few of them gave him money.

A lady walked by and saw the sign. She wrote something else in the back of the sign, then she put the sign back so that everyone who went by would see the new words. After that, almost everyone who passed by gave the man money.

The blind man recognized her from her shoes that he touched before when the lady came back. He asked her what she wrote. She told him that she wrote down the same thing, but in different words. “It’s a beautiful day and I can’t see it.”

Should we be surprised that the second sign was more powerful? I do not think so. The first sign simply stated that the man was blind and he needed help, whereas the second one implied that people were luckier than him, because they were able to enjoy a beautiful day.

The second one reminded people to be grateful for what they have, and it brought out the sympathy toward the blind man. Consequently, as a result of this compassion that they are much more open and willing to give him the money.

Moral of the Story: Change your words and it will change your world.

http://loveneverending.com/?p=1952

We should all practice and apply this to our daily lives – by changing our words, we can make change, too…..  Our words are more powerful than you can imagine….
Sending some positive energy out your way.

Karate Students Going Green

The Greener Grass
by Peggy McColl

Author of On Being…The Creator of Your Destiny
The 8 Proven Secrets to SMART Success
On Being a Dog with a Bone

“If you think the grass is greener on the other side…  try watering your own lawn.”

Have you ever felt that someone else’s life was so much better than your own?  I think at one time or another we all tend to view another person’s life as more appealing.  But, is it really more appealing or are we simply forgetting our own gifts OR are we forgetting that we have the power to change how we “feel” about circumstances even if we can’t change the event.

Here are some techniques to apply if you experience that feeling of the grass looking greener on the other side:

1) Evaluate the areas of your life from an “observer” point of view and not a place of judgment.  An “observer” views a situation as a learning experience and feels a sense of relief knowing that the awareness of the situation provides an opportunity to choose differently in the future and it provides an opportunity to grow. Not at any time would an “observer” make any judgment about an action or reaction rather they would simply recognize the opportunity to now express who they truly are.  Self confidence is diminished with judgment.  Judgment serves no purpose whatsoever.  I’m not saying for one minute to ignore destructive behavior, rather, I’m saying evaluate this behavior with your observer eyes and simply make a choice to no longer partake in destruction going forward.

2) Recognize and take note of the benefits, gifts, blessings, treasures in your own life.  Here are some questions to help you accomplish this:

What is great about my life?
What do I enjoy most in my life?
What are my strengths?
What are my unique talents?
What have I done that I’m particularly proud of?
Who do I love?
Who loves me?
What am I most grateful for in my life?
What are my greatest memories?
What do I look forward to?

As you were reading those questions did you immediately start to feel better?  Questions such as the ones listed above will change what you focus on.  Choose some of your favorite questions write them out on an index card and place them in your bathroom.  While you are brushing your teeth keep the index card in front of you and ask and answer the questions.

3) As the quote above denotes:  “If you think the grass is greener on the other side, try watering your lawn.”  Get to work on yourself.  Create a self improvement program and get to work on it.  Start to adjust your attitude to an attitude of gratitude.  Just like a Coach "Life Coach" would do for his players, evaluate the areas that you need to focus on to improve your performance and create a game plan, then get to work.  It doesn’t take a lot of effort to have subtle improvement and growth every day.  Once you start to work on your self improvement plan you’ll soon find that it is much easier than you think.

4) Know that another person’s life isn’t always as rosy as it may seem.  Everyone has challenges.  As my grandma use to say “If people hung their problems on their clothes line as they do with their clothes, you would quickly be running back to your own back yard.”  Most people do a great job of concealing their problems, and even when we think another hasn’t any challenges with their life, you may want to think again.  In no way whatsoever am I implying that I want you to wish anything bad for anyone.  I’m simply stating that things aren’t always as they appear (maybe the grass isn’t as green as you think it is).

5) Don’t compare your life to anther person’s life.  If you see someone or know of someone who appears to have “more” than you, maybe you can find out what they have done, or, are doing and learn from them to create the same in your life.    When I was a child my Father was an avid gardener and our lawn and gardens were the envy of the neighborhood.  But my Father worked in our garden every single evening and on the weekend.  He worked to create the beauty that we all enjoyed and I know he was proud.  He knew that if he neglected the landscaping the lawn and the gardens would suffer and he chose not to allow that to happen.  Just like a successful business person, a gold medal winning athlete, a high scorer, a straight “A” student knows, you must put in the effort to enjoy the rewards.  Water your lawn, pull out the weeds, plant the seeds, fertilize and keep an eye on the results so that you can determine what needs to be done to keep that lawn beautiful, healthy and green.  Enjoy the beauty!

Karate Kids in Scottsdale Planting a Garden (life)

An excerpt from 'The Strangest Secret' by Earl Nightingale...

George Bernard Shaw said, "People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can't find them, they make them."

Well, it's pretty apparent, isn't it? And every person who discovered this believed (for a while) that he was the first one to work it out. We become what we think about.

Conversely, the person who has no goal, who doesn't know where he's going, and whose thoughts must therefore be thoughts of confusion, anxiety and worry - his life becomes one of frustration, fear, anxiety and worry. And if he thinks about nothing... he becomes nothing.

How does it work? Why do we become what we think about? Well, I'll tell you how it works, as far as we know. To do this, I want to tell you about a situation that parallels the human mind.

Suppose a farmer has some land, and it's good, fertile land. The land gives the farmer a choice; he may plant in that land whatever he chooses. The land doesn't care. It's up to the farmer to make the decision.

We're comparing the human mind with the land because the mind, like the land, doesn't care what you plant in it. It will return what you plant, but it doesn't care what you plant.

Now, let's say that the farmer has two seeds in his hand- one is a seed of corn, the other is nightshade, a deadly poison. He digs two little holes in the earth and he plants both seeds - one corn, the other nightshade. He covers up the holes, waters and takes care of the land...and what will happen? Invariably, the land will return what was planted.

As it's written in the Bible, "As ye sow, so shall ye reap."

Remember the land doesn't care. It will return poison in just as wonderful abundance as it will corn. So up come the two plants - one corn, one poison.

The human mind is far more fertile, far more incredible and mysterious than the land, but it works the same way. It doesn't care what we plant...success...or failure. A concrete, worthwhile goal...or confusion, misunderstanding, fear, anxiety and so on. But what we plant must return to us.

You see, the human mind is the last great unexplored continent on earth. It contains riches beyond our wildest dreams. It will return anything we want to plant.

So what will you plant in your 'garden' (life) today?

Sending some positive energy out your way.

North Ranch Elementary School students need Self Defense

A little close to Home.....

Phoenix police: Teacher collected child porn for 10 years

I wanted to get the word out since North Ranch is just a few blocks away from our Karate School

As reported in the Arizona Republic-12 News Breaking News Team --  by DiAngelea Millar, Eugene Scott and JJ Hensley - Feb. 14, 2012 03:40 PM

The North Ranch Elementary School teacher arrested this week on suspicion of sexually exploiting children told police that he had been collecting child pornography online for at least 10 years and that he was attracted to young boys, court records show.

Thomas Warner, 54, of Phoenix was arrested about 11 a.m. Monday after detectives found "numerous items of child pornography" on a computer inside his home in the 14000 block of North Coral Gables Drive, north of Thunderbird Road, police said. Several external thumb drives also were found containing hundreds of images of the same nature.

Warner taught fourth grade at North Ranch Elementary, 16406 N. 61st Place, a northeast Phoenix K-6 school in the Paradise Valley Unified School District.

He had been at North Ranch for six years and had a Department of Public Safety teacher clearance card, said Marty Macurak, district spokeswoman.

"He joined our district after completing his student teaching at Deer Valley Unified School District about 10 years ago," she said. "He taught at Indian Bend and Arrowhead (elementary schools) about seven years ago."

On Sunday, Phoenix police were notified by a computer repair company that a laptop computer had images and videos depicting the sexual exploitation of minors. Police found several hundred images of boys ages 8 to 12 engaged in sex acts, records show. Police said Warner admitted he had been collecting these images for more than a decade and that he was sexually attracted to boys in that age range.

"There is no indication that our students were harmed," she said. "We continue to be in touch with investigators and will keep our parent community apprised if any new information arises."

Warner "admitted that he uses his position as a teacher to compensate for the guilt he feels about viewing the images," the probable cause statement reads.

Macurak said the district placed Warner on administrative leave on Monday, "immediately after being notified of his arrest. He was not on school property when he was arrested." She also said that Principal Sarah HartleyCQ "informed parents of the arrest by telephone" late Monday afternoon "to allow the police time to release information following Warner's booking."

But on Tuesday morning, some preschool parents still had not heard about the incident. Sheba Bano's son attends preschool at North Ranch and was unaware that a fourth-grade teacher had been arrested.

"I don't think many of the parents know," she said. "Maybe because my son is in pre-K and on the other side of the school, I wasn't notified."

She was concerned about how the arrest will affect the school and the children. "The reputation of our school is at stake," Bano said. "Today's children are very intelligent and they observe. Who knows what they saw?"

Macurak said preschool parents were not informed because it is considered a separate program.

On Tuesday, North Ranch had a "care team" of counselors and psychologists available for parents, students and staff.

"Our parents' community has responded with support for the school, principal and staff," Macurak said. "They feel the same way we do, which is concern for the children's safety, saddened and betrayed."

Warner was booked into the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail on 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, according to police.

Court records said Warner must post a $100,000 bond to be released on house arrest, where he will be electronically monitored. He will not be allowed access to computers and cannot have contact with anyone younger than 18.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 23.

Kids and parents learning valuable and important life lessons through martial arts

Kids and parents learning valuable and important life lessons through martial arts

By Phil Giannotti/Parental Guidance

I remember the time I went to karate class. I was in middle school and the class was a free trial. Once the class started any notion of learning actual karate went right out the window when I realized we would be jumping around on a soft mat where you could fall without getting hurt. I spent an hour attempting poorly executed professional wrestling moves, which would have been quite embarrassing had every kid in the room not been doing the exact same thing.

Now my children go to karate class, only this time things are very organized and professional. Unlike the karate class of my youth, which was held above a pizzeria in a room that was designed to be an office, my kids go to an actual dojo which is very well known and well respected. The entire building is dedicated to martial arts and the instructors are very serious about how they teach their students.

The school teaches a lot of important values that benefit both parents and children. Unlike other schools, students are not simply advanced to the next level because they show up. They are required to work hard and learn positive traits like respect, loyalty, confidence, self-control and perseverance. Even the youngest students are taught the importance of being accountable for their actions. When it comes time to test for your next level, the instructors will hold back a student that is not ready to be advanced.

They also provide special classes where they teach students about how to deal with bullies and gang influences at school. They recently shared the video of the child who fought off her would-be abductor at a Wal-Mart, imploring parents to make sure that their children know what to do in a similar situation.

The most important thing is they do not pamper kids. Instead, they hold them to a high standard. What drives me crazy in any kind of organized activity is that kids are coddled. Everybody is afraid to hurt someone’s feelings or leave someone out. What I find impressive about this school is how skillfully they mix strictness with fairness and positive reinforcement, making sure all the students realize that achievement is a direct result of how hard you work.

Apologies to all the moms and dads that think their kids deserve special treatment, but I think that strict-and-fair is exactly what a lot of kids today need and deserve. I don’t want my kids to grow up thinking things are owed to them. I want them to learn life is full of challenges and you have to work hard to realize your goals and dreams. At some point it became okay to give kids a free pass. Instead of finding a way to help kids grow through the stimulating challenges of life, people chose to insulate kids from adversity. Why is that? The habits our children pick up only intensify as they grow. Helping our kids by not letting them find out that life is tough cultivates laziness, self-indulgence and disrespectfulness.

Don’t believe it? Just read the news and chances are you will find a number of stories involving kids who could have used a stricter influence in their childhood.

My wife and I don’t send our kids to karate for fun and games. We send them because they teach core principles that are desperately missing from a lot of children’s lives. They are learning discipline, humility and self-control and other important fundamental values in a unique setting. Not only that, the school helps its students realize that life is not always easy and sometimes you have to bust your butt to get the things you want. These are all character qualities that any parent should want their children to develop and master.

Wal-Mart Kidnapping: How can I keep my child safe from unkind strangers?

Wal-Mart Kidnapping: How can I keep my child safe from unkind strangers?

This is a guest post by Dr. Robyn Silverman, creator of our Powerful Words character development program. This article was originally published on Dr. Robyn’s blog.

My Facebook page is hopping today after I posted about the little girl, Brittney Baxter, age 7, who fought her way out of getting kidnapped from Wal-Mart yesterday, when a man grabbed her, covered her mouth and tried to subdue her. The girl is safe and the alleged kidnapper in custody, but these stories always leave a trail of fear, frustration, concern, and questions from parents and educators.

Several parents and concerned citizens have gotten in touch because they are unsure about how they can protect the children in their lives from a similar situation. I wanted to reach out to you to provide some tips. Please feel free to pass it on and repost the link as this is an issue on many people’s minds today.

In terms of “stranger danger,” what are we supposed to tell our young kids?

(1) People are mostly kind…but some aren’t: For the most part, people are good, kind and helpful. But not everyone. “Most people are very kind. When we go to the store, there are many kind people who are there to help you, right? Most people want everyone to be safe and happy. But some people are not kind. Some people do not make safe and kind choices. We don’t always know who the kind and unkind people are because there are no superhero or villain masks in real life.”

(2) Stay by the person who brought you: Your school age children should be told to stay by you or the person who brought them. “When we go out, please stay where I can see you and you can see me. Please don’t wander into the next aisle alone because I won’t be able to see you. Wandering off is an unsafe choice. Staying by me is a safe choice.”

(3) State what you want in the positive as well as in the negative: We don’t want to just say “don’t wander off” or “don’t leave the store” but also “please stay where I can see you” and “stay in the store.” Children respond well with what “to do” rather than just telling them what not to do.

(4) Yell as loud as you can: This is not the time for inside voices. “If someone grabs you, yell: “This is not my mom/dad! This is not my mom/dad! Help me! This is not my Mom/Dad!” Make sure they understand that they should not just yell “no” or “leave me alone” because some patrons might simply think that your child is throwing a tantrum with his parent.

(5) Get physical: We always tell our children to keep their hands to themselves. In this “stranger danger” situation, they need permission to get physical. That means kicking, hitting, biting, or whatever they need to do to stay safe. Tell your child to move their legs like they are riding a bicycle as this makes them hard to hold. If someone puts their hand over their mouth, continue to kick—and bite the person’s hand.

(6) Stay aware: It’s easy to get distracted by the toys and games in a big store. Brittney was looking at toys when the kidnapper tried to restrain her. Being aware can give your child time as well as vital information. Say; “keep your eyes and ears open. Know who is around you and what’s going on.”

(7) Don’t go anywhere with a stranger: Educate your child about some tactics to lure young children. Gifts, promises of puppies, toys, or even lies like “Your Mom told me to get you” or “Your Dad is hurt…come with me” might be used. “When you are in a store, you are to stay in the store unless we leave together. Never leave the store without the person you came in with unless Mom/Dad tells you that you can personally.”

(8) If you’re lost…here’s where to go: We don’t want our children to panic if they can’t find us. Tell them to look for someone in the store uniform, go to the service desk, find a cashier, or, it’s often a safe bet to approach a mom with children. “Ask that person for help. Tell them your name and who you are looking for. Tell them that you are lost and you need to find us right away.”

(9) Stand with confidence: Body awareness can be one of the first lines of defense. Think about it; two children—one standing with confidence, head held high, walking as if he knows where he is going and what he is doing vs one who has his shoulders rolled, head and eyes down, unaware of his surroundings. For additional body awareness and self defense, enroll your child is a top notch martial arts academy that teaches children more than just kicking and punching. If you need a recommendation, please ask me—our Powerful Words Member Schools and Personal Development Centers are all over the world.

(10) Trust your gut: This is really a message about all choices. “If your tummy feels weird or you have a little voice inside you that tells you ‘this doesn’t feel right’ or ‘run’ or ‘get closer to Dad/Mom’ then listen to it. That’s your gut speaking. Your gut—that little voice inside you that tells you when something is right or wrong– is very smart.”

The last thing I would tell you is to allow your children to practice. Have them practice yelling, kicking, screaming, punching a pillow, and moving their legs. Have them practice talking to a store clerk and bring them to a store and encourage them to speak to those in uniform so that they get comfortable doing it. My hope is that the children in your life will never need to use many of these tips—better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them.

To the wellness and safety of you and yours-
