In a Scottsdale Karate "State of Mind"

Karate is a state of mind
The three minds" of karate - these are...
zenshin ("preparatory mind"),
tsushin ("concentrating mind")
and zanshin ("remaining mind").

The founder of Shotokan Karate, Gichin Funakoshi (The Father of Modern Karate) has created a system comprising of 5 levels of Black Belt (dan ranks). These 5 dan are distributed along the life of practice. Funakoshi was inspired by the existing system of ranks for judo and kendo. For some to be, BLACK BELT's, you must understand the five levels of consciousness through which an individual evolves in Zen philosophy, Buddhist and Shinto.

It is interesting to see how the grading system created by Funakoshi has its roots in Eastern religions.

Shodan (first dan) indicates that one has acquired strong technical foundation and a physical sense developed. In Eastern religions, this first level is learning to control the physical senses: sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste.

To achieve the rank Nidan (second dan) , one must demonstrate an understanding of combinations and apply them strategically. In Eastern religions, the second level represents the control of intelligence and strategies to apply them in life.

Sandan (third dan) requires the acquisition of calm, a strong mind and a relaxation of the shoulders! This third level for the Eastern religions is the acquisition of serenity for meditation.

Yodan (fourth dan) emphasizes the unity between mind and body in achieving the technical report to the next should permeate every action. Religion aside, this level is the mind-body relationship built around compassion.

Godan (fifth dan) is the flawless execution techniques as a physically and morally. This implies a spiritual consciousness expressing itself through self-discipline to be. Spirituality and oneness are the expression of this level in the Eastern religions.

Martial Arts for Girls - Girls do Karate too

Martial Arts for girls
Girls do Karate too

Pretty much any martial art would, I think, satisfy the self defense needs of a child. Self defense is not about fighting, it's about awareness of your situation and the confidence to listen to yourself and avoid bad situations. For a child especially, the fighting element is way more about knowing how to control one's body than it is about how to actual fight anyone.

The most important factor is going to be the atmosphere of the dojo, not style. Find something friendly, with a good kid’s class. I would personally recommend Goshin Karate and Judo Academy because they teach a blend of Karate and Judo (Stand up and Ground Self Defense) Kind of a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA before it was cool) and they emphasize families.  ~~ Scottsdale Karate Dadthe quality

Anti-Bullying Week - It's every week in my world!

Everyone has the right to be safe...

Bullying: How to Handle It

So now you know that bullying is a big problem that affects a lot of kids, but what do you do if someone is bullying you? Our advice falls into two categories: preventing a run-in with the bully, and what to do if you end up face-to-face with the bully.

Preventing a Run-In With a Bully
Don't give the bully a chance. As much as you can, avoid the bully. You can't go into hiding or skip class, of course. But if you can take a different route and avoid him or her, do so.

Stand tall and be brave. When you're scared of another person, you're probably not feeling your bravest. But sometimes just acting brave is enough to stop a bully. How does a brave person look and act? Stand tall and you'll send the message: "Don't mess with me." It's easier to feel brave when you feel good about yourself. See the next tip!

Feel good about you. Nobody's perfect, but what can you do to look and feel your best? Maybe you'd like to be more fit. If so, maybe you'll decide to get more exercise, watch less TV, and eat healthier snacks. Or maybe you feel you look best when you shower in the morning before school. If so, you could decide to get up a little earlier so you can be clean and refreshed for the school day.

Get a buddy (and be a buddy). Two is better than one if you're trying to avoid being bullied. Make a plan to walk with a friend or two on the way to school or recess or lunch or wherever you think you might meet the bully. Offer to do the same if a friend is having bully trouble. Get involved if you see bullying going on in your school — tell an adult, stick up for the kid being bullied, and tell the bully to stop.

Cycle of Abundance

What is the Cycle of Abundance?

Being at ease in the world is a choice... It’s about engaging life from a place of peacefulness and open-heartedness. Life will do what it does. We get to choose how we will BE in the midst of it. Two people can experience the very same situation and have very different experiences. What’s different is the lens they look through and the action they take in response to life.

We often think of abundance as a river, flowing, yes, but only moving in one direction. Abundance is much smarter than that. It knows how to replenish and sustain itself, flowing in a circular pattern the same way the breath moves: first the inhale and then the exhale.

ALIGNING is moving with the flow, awake and available to inspiration and opportunity. We merge with the workings of an intelligent universe and release the burden of being the solitary enforcer.

ATTRACTING is energy that is focused yet not forced. Rather than insisting things happen, we direct our expectation and attention on what we want and draw it to us. The more whole-hearted and peaceful we are, the more irresistible we are.

RECEIVING means being available and accessible to what is being offered. It is the depth of the inhale, spacious, open, relaxed. If we are numb or unavailable, we never know real satisfaction. It makes room for aliveness.

GRATITUDE is generative energy that acknowledges our connectedness. It deepens pleasure and expands us to accept more and more good things into our lives. The absence of gratitude leaves us dry, aloof, and perpetually disenchanted with life.

GENEROSITY is the natural result of being full, like a bathtub spilling over. People who are generous share freely because they know they can’t be diminished; there is sense of freedom and resilience. Keeping everything for ourselves leaves us lonely and defensive.

GIVING is pure pleasure when done with an open and full heart. Never an obligation, giving is the exhale that makes room for the next inhale. Since there is no fear of letting go, we stay current and fluid in our lives.

Great Lessons from the Karate Kid Movie

Daniel: Hey - you ever get into fights when you were a kid?
Miyagi: Huh - plenty.
Daniel: Yeah, but it wasn't like the problem I have, right?
Miyagi: Why? Fighting fighting. Same same.
Daniel: Yeah, but you knew karate.
Miyagi: Someone always know more.
Daniel: You mean there were times when you were scared to fight?
Miyagi: Always scare. Miyagi hate fighting.
Daniel: Yeah, but you like karate.
Miyagi: So?
Daniel: So, karate's fighting. You train to fight.
Miyagi: That what you think?
Daniel: [pondering] No.
Miyagi: Then why train?
Daniel: [thinks] So I won't have to fight.
Miyagi: [laughs] Miyagi have hope for you.

Karate Kid Movie Discover Life and Success Lessons

Daniel is finally cornered by several who belong to the same karate school. As Daniel is passing out from the beating he sees Miyagi, the elderly gardener leaps into the fray and save him by outfighting half a dozen teenagers. Miyagi and Daniel soon find out the real motivator behind the boys' violent attitude in the form of their karate teacher. Miyagi promises to teach Daniel karate and arranges a fight at the all-valley tournament some months off. Miyagi seems more interested in having Daniel paint fences and wax cars than teaching him Karate. Here are some great lessons we can learn from this movie.

Lessons 1: Life will knock you down. You can choose whether to get back up. Life is unpredictable. You’ll face setbacks. Things don’t always go as planned. Sometimes life can really seem unfair. At the end of the day, it’s not what happens to you, but how you respond. One of the most important things you can do when you get knocked down, is get up again. This is how you build your resiliency for whatever life may throw your way. Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

Lessons 2: You can choose whether to do or do not. There is no try. When Mr. Miyagi asked Daniel if he was ready to learn Karate, Daniel’s response of “I guess so”  The old man compared Daniel’s response to walking down a road: walking on the left side of the road is fine, walking on the right side of the road is fine, but walking down the middle of the road will eventually get you squished.

Lessons 3: First learn stand, then learn fly. Daniel desperately wanted to learn how to do the crane kick. Had Miyagi put the kid up on the stump and forced him to learn a Crane Kick before anything else, he might have failed miserably and given up. Instead, he taught Daniel progressively more difficult strikes, balancing techniques, and blocks, built up his confidence, and only then did he allow Daniel-san to learn the Crane Kick. “First learn stand…then learn fly…nature’s rule.. Daniel-san, not mine.” — Mr. Miyagi

Lessons 4: In Okinawa, all Miyagi know two things: fish and karate… Growing up in Okinawa, Mr. Miyagi learned two things from his father: fishing, and karate. How did he find time to become a great Karate master AND a great fisherman? Because he found a good balance in his life and recognized the importance of having both. Mr. Miyagi said it best: “Lesson not just karate only. Lesson for whole life. Whole life have a balance, everything be better. ”Man who catch fly with chopstick accomplish anything.

Lessons 5: At the end of the day it just doesn’t matter. Never forget that the only person you’re really competing with when it comes to your health is yourself. Having a class system to determine your level is nice, but don’t let it be the only benchmark you use to determine your success. No matter how big, slow or weak you are compared to those around you, it really only matters if you’re getting healthier, faster, and stronger compared to the “You from Yesterday”.

Lessons 6: March bravely into battle without an ounce of fear Mr. Miyagi, the guy who could single-handedly defeat six Cobra Kai at once, was always scared to fight. Courage is not being fearless, but rather carrying on to perform the action despite being afraid. As Miyagi said : “It’s okay to lose to opponent. It’s never okay to lose to FEAR!” Unless it’s going to actually kill you, sometimes you just have to get out of your head, turn off your brain, and go for it.

Lessons 7: Don’t play practical jokes on the guys who will kill you. When a bunch of karate-knowing guys want to kicks your ass, it’s not a good idea to play practical jokes on them. Daniel-san thought it would be funny to splash water on the Cobra Kai dudes. Of course, Mr. Miyagi saves him. So, you must avoid the guys who are trying to kill you. You can’t count on a Mr. Miyagi to save you.

Lessons 8: Nothing in life is free… People who saw the movie thought Mr. Miyagi is just teaching Daniel karate by making him do all that work around the house (wax on; wax off). But he was teaching him how to earn his keep. What was Mr. Miyagi supposed to do? Teach him for free? You think the Cobra Kais were getting taught for free. No way. You want something, then you have to pay for it one way or another. That’s life.

We may have/had several Mr. Miyagi’s (teachers and mentors) in our lives, or we may be getting our lessons from the school of life. Or both. In life there will be things we go through, lessons we learn, that we didn’t ask for or want. Think about your own life. What experiences have you had that didn’t make sense to you at the time, but made sense to you later? This is how life is!!!

Wax on, right hand. Wax off, left hand. Wax on, wax off. Breathe in through nose, out the mouth. Wax on, wax off. Don't forget to breathe, very important.

LAST THOUGHT…  The ultimate goal of the Art of Karate is not about a medal or a trophy…  but rather about self defense and the perfection of the character of its participants…  You should not fight but if you have to defend yourself you should fight and you should win…

Want It – Have It – Be It

Write yourself a permission slip

Since we were toddlers, we've been conditioned to ask permission from the authority figures in our lives: "Mom, can I have a cookie?" "Dad, can I go with my friends to the mall?" "Mr. Boggs, can I go to the bathroom?"

The reflex to ask permission before fulfilling a need is so deeply ingrained in our brain that we don't realize it's still there--even in adulthood. So is it any wonder that when you start crafting a vision for your ideal lifestyle in retirement, you suddenly stop dead and think, "Is this okay?"

When it comes to reinvention, there's only one true authority figure in your life--you. To avoid self-sabotage, sign your own permission slips to:

Want it: Reaching for something far beyond what your family and friends have accomplished can create feelings of guilt or disloyalty. It may feel somehow as if you were leaving them behind or not respecting their life choices. But if in the planning stage of reinvention you think "I'm asking for too much" or "I don't really need everything," you put limits on your goals before you've even begun. Make it fully OK to have everything you desire, and give yourself permission to go for all of it!

Have it: In my work as a karate instructor for children at Goshin Karate and Judo Academy in Scottsdale Arizona, I've found that it's not uncommon for people to pull back or become paralyzed with fear just as their reinvention goals are coming to fruition. At the moment they should be saying Yes! they're saying "Well, maybe not...." If, when a dream position in your company opens up or a healthy relationship evolves to a new level you find yourself saying "I'm not sure I can handle this," you haven't given yourself permission to "have it." To get past this, remember that you deserve the opportunities you've worked so hard to cultivate and give yourself the go-ahead to have them. Then apply for that job or say yes to that deeper relationship!

Be it: When you reinvent yourself, you make many positive changes to your life. Along the way those changes may start to feel uncomfortable, as if you're playing a role meant for anyone but you. This shows up when you say things to yourself like "I can't believe it's me in this job/ relationship/ new body." If you subconsciously tell yourself you're unworthy of the results of your own effort, you haven't given yourself permission to "be it." When you arrive at this stage of your reinvention, it's important to fully claim the new you. You're ready to be the new boss/ the beloved partner/ the fit woman. So be it. And BE it with all your heart!

Roger Boggs - My Life

Erma Bombeck was a lovely lady and had some pretty serious words about this. Here were her words after she found out that she had a fatal disease:

IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER

I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the "good" living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather rambling about his youth.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.

I would have sat on the lawn with my children and not worried about grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television, and more while watching life.

I would have gone to bed when I was sick, instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment, realizing that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.

When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, "Later. Now go get washed up for dinner."

There would have been more "I love you's" and more "I'm sorry's". . . but mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute . . . look at it and really see it . . . and never give it back.”

It got me to thinking, what would I do different?

I took every chance I got... there were no guarantees… I said "Yes I Can" and did it.... Teaching Martial Arts to Kids is what I will do for the rest of my life... Life has been good to me... BUT... I am a human being... I've wondered what my life would have been like had I made other choices along the way... But I can't go back and I'll never know what would have changed in my life. So, I just know that we all need to take Erma's advice and seize every moment and really live what's left of it... That sounds good to me... How about you?

Thanks for stopping by...

Sending some love and positive energy out your way...

People Magazine’s Hero of the Week

People Magazine’s
Hero of the Week

One of my parents brought in this article and said Mr. Boggs this reminds me a little of you and the…. "GOSHIN ACTION HEROES" -- I have a long way to go to be this guy, but I thought I would share it with you just the same...   People Magazine’s Hero of the Week.....

Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg – Southfield, Mich.
Healing Through Karate

56-year-old Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg from Southfield Michigan appears in is this week’s ‘Heroes Among Us’ page on People Magazine, due to his work with children who fight cancer in his nonprofit organization ‘Kids Kicking Cancer.’

Goldberg’s toddler Sara was diagnosed with leukemia in 1980. At the hospital she’d tell her anxious father “don’t cry Daddy.” She died at the age of two. “Thirty one years later I still cry,” Goldberg told the magazine.

Goldberg, a black belt in Choi Kwon Do, realized he could help seriously ill kids with his skills, so he founded ‘Kids Kicking Cancer,’ and he’s now providing lessons in martial arts, breathing techniques and meditation to 6000 children. Sara Budzynski, 15, who battled leukemia has mastered more than kicks: “The biggest thing I’ve learned is not to give up,” she says.
