Character Development and the Martial Arts

“To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.”
 ~ Steve Prefontaine

At Goshin Karate and Judo Academy our main goal is character development and to enhance self-esteem. We achieve this through building self-confidence, and by developing a sense of respect for others, in addition to teaching incredibly effective self defense skills through Martial Arts.

Parents, family members, and teachers frequently speak of the beneficial effects that Goshin Karate and Judo Academy has had in performance, self-esteem, and general attitude.

How to deal with Haters

How to Deal with Haters
Dealing with Haters

Are you sick of all the haters? In order to deal with haters one must understand a "Hater". One must understand why they say and do the hating things they do. Here's a quick guide on how to deal with haters!

Instructions
In order to understand the process of why haters hate, you must understand the definition of a hater. A hater is "A person whose jealousy of another person success or achievements makes them verbally nit-pick any flaws no matter how small or just make up flaws in order to somehow try and belittle the successful person."
Instead of getting mad at haters for hating, keep doing what you do that brings hate your way. Having haters is one way of knowing you’re constantly doing something right. It's always good to have your name in someone else's mouth, keeps you popular.

Understand that it's in a haters blood to hate. It's not that they hate you, but rather they hate themselves or hate others who have. The distaste a hater has for you will only grow over time if you continue to succeed, so push forward.

The most simple way to deal with a hater is not to deal with them at all. They seem to always posses a negative aura around them and it may rub off on you if you're around them to long, so let a hater do their job, let them drink their haterade and eat their hater tots

Martial Arts is Therapy

Making the Most of Martial Arts as Therapy
By Jennifer Lawler

Many people have discovered the healing power of martial arts, as they strive to get a grip on emotional issues that may have followed them for years.

Confronting your fears

Often, what holds people back in life is fear. People are afraid of failing, as well as succeeding — afraid of speaking up, and at the same time, remaining silent. No wonder folks feel stressed and anxious.

But learning martial arts is a powerful antidote to all that fear. The first time someone hits you or throws you to the mat, you're probably going to be afraid of getting hurt. The first time that you hit or throw someone else, you're probably going to be afraid of hurting him. But soon you realize that people aren't that fragile. You learn that you're strong, you can defend yourself, and even that you're worth defending.

Martial artists who have been abused often find themselves confronting the abuse during their training because all martial arts involve, essentially, violent physical action directed at you. This can be a tricky, emotional time. Learning to defend yourself can help you come to terms with the abuse, but you may need a little extra help. Talk to a trusted friend, join a support group, or talk to a counselor with experience in helping abused people.

"We're trying to help as many kids as we can with the economy being the way it is," Mr. Roger Boggs - Owner of Goshin Karate and Judo Academy

Back to School Time

Here we are again! The couple of weeks before school starts (at least for us here in Scottsdale Arizona). Where has the time gone?! Here are some things to prepare for the new school year:

  1. Get all school forms filled out and ready to go, lists ready to check off.
  2. Clean out study and/or art areas, out with the old in with the new!
  3. Sorting through closets and dressers – some things have been outgrown, some have seen their last days. Donate, sell or store away for younger siblings.
  4. Check out open houses for extra-curricular activities - art, music or Martial Arts– if you’re not sure what your child would be interested in, this would be a good opportunity to check out the facility, classes and teachers. Be sure to ask to attend a trial class/session at no charge!
  5. Getting ready to buy the school clothes and supplies. Although you can always buy online, but nothing beats being able to try on clothes and check things out first hand. Stores have become savvier and offer sales around the same time of year.
  6. Get your own desk ready, take out all old school year information and paperwork – get ready for the new stuff!
  7. Plan some play dates with school mates – get them excited to see their friends and start school!

Sneak in a little exercise – Scottsdale

Sneak in a little exercise – Scottsdale

When it comes to fitness, every little bit helps

As a martial arts instructor and fitness consultant, I often hear people tell me that they would like to exercise but they just don’t have the time or the money for a gym membership. This statement always fascinates me. I don’t know if people really believe that or if it’s just an easy excuse for them. Many people today share the mindset that in order to get into shape, they have to join a gym and exercise at least three or four days a week for an hour to get results. They justify that someday they will have that kind of time, but not now. So they put off exercise for another day or another time in their life when their schedule clears up. Although it might be ideal to work out at the gym every day for an hour, it isn’t necessary. You can do a lot in a short period of time.

It’s amazing how much you can get done when you are mindfully trying to get a little extra exercise in every day. Ideally, this should not replace your workout, it should be in addition to it. Here are a few examples:

Take the stairs not the escalator or elevator

If feasible, walk to the park or the store instead of drive

One day do 10 push-ups and 10 air squats every hour, the next day do general household chores with an exercise mindset

When watching TV, do calisthenics during the commercials of a one-hour show

I challenge you to come up with your own list. There is no downside and lots of upside. Who knows? With a little luck, maybe we will still fit into the clothes of our youth when we’re in our 90s.
